Hi all, after I gave birth to my last baby, my tummy was really bloated, and the lovely midwife gave me something pepperminty to drink, that she'd mixed with a little boiling water. It did the job, and gas was released both ends!!
(sorry, tmi)
I am 10 weeks preg again, and my tummy is so sore from bloating. I look more pregnant than I am. I can't take gaviscon as it makes me retch, and rennies aren't much better.
I've looked on my 'drugs' chart from last time and the stuff is just written up as 'Peppermint water, 5 ml.' I know it's not a medicine. Any one know what it is and where I can get it and can I take it now?
Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Don't know about peppermint water.

But you could make peppermint tea - either with a bought tea bag or simply by infusing some mint leaves in boiling water.

it's just peppermint cordial isn't it? schweppes make it i think... my granny used to always have it in...

i just drink peppermint tea...

Clairef29 · 01/07/2009 21:57

Its peppermint tea you're looking for, my midwife gave it to me too when I was in hospital, ot works wonders! I still drink it now! I buy mine at Sainsburys but I would think most supermarkets sell it; or places like Holland & Barrett. Happy tea drinking!

This stuff was very concentrated and clear. If I can't find it I might try tea, but have drunk that before and not that keen on it!
Maybe I should ring the midwife unit tomorrow and ask them directly, but feel I shouldn't bother them.

everyone sells peppermint tea lol - i thought you meant the bottled stuff?

madwomanintheattic · 01/07/2009 22:01

it's peppermint cordial.

linspins · 01/07/2009 22:01

(clear as in colourless, and tasted like extra extra strong mints)

If it was sweet it was peppermint cordial - if it wasn't it was probably peppermint tincture which is very concentrated. Get a big bottle of water, stick some peppermint leaves it in and leave in the fridge for 24 hours and you get the same effect though. Don't forget to remove leaves before drinking though

linspins · 01/07/2009 22:04

Ah, maybe it was tincture then. Can you buy this?

Yes - peppermint essence - supermarkets in the baking aisle. Or the purer stuff in pharmacies -there is little difference in taste or effect though

Thanks everyone! I knew Mumsnetters would have some answers. I was off to bed and thought I might as well ask you all, and ta-da!
Right, will arm myself with all manner of peppermint liquids and hopefully goodbye bloating. Then just got to get rid of the morning(allday) sickness. Gosh, pregnancy is such fun!

I hadn't heard of it but sounds lush, do you reckon you can drink it just for the taste?! Maybe I'll have to search out some cordial tomorrow..... new craving in the making :)

Linspins, thank you. I followed the peppermint extract advice and have literally not felt better in days. Been so miserable, Dh may actually feel he has a wife back now Grin

You can take peppermint oil tablets too, they work for me.
