ring stuck. Have tried ice, oil and the thread trick. Please help!

I remember there was a thread on this recently. I have got wedding ring stuck. i remember reading the discussion weeks ago and thinking - oh Im fine, that hasnt happened to me! but suddenly my hands have swollen up over the last 2 weeks. Ive tried soap/oil, cooling my hands with frozen peas first, have tried the winding the thread thing (having found a diagram on google - although not sure if I did it completely right.) I tried twice and it still didnt work. Has anybody had to go to casualty because of this. Im worried that it has now got too bad. Am now 38.5 weeks and its the last thing I need!!

Have you tried using vaseline?

butter worked for me when I was 38 weeks and was swollen up with pre-eclampsia.

It's worse if you panic and frantically try to pull them off.

Get a bowl of cold and I mean as cold as you can get it, water (put some ice cubes in if needs be), Put fairy liquid around your rings then sit down with your hand in the bowl and just leave it for as long as you can stand it. Watch tele and take your mind off it.

The other thing you can try is jewellry cleaner if you have any.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but my fingers swelled suddenly when I had pre-eclampsia, I tried everything, just like you - but in the end I had to go to my jewellers to have it cut off!! Of course, as soon as my fingers went back to normal, my dp had my ring repaired and you'd never know it had been cut in two! Sorry!

Pulling at your finger makes it swell. Can you go somewhere cool and dry to calm down for a bit? Freezer section in Iceland, something like that.I find liquid soap is pretty good.

Did you watch the episode of eastenders where Kat couldn't get her ring off and big Mo used HEMMORHOID CREAM (possible bad spelling).

Disgusting but maybe worth a try. apparently it reduces swelling.

Agree with Irishbird, go to a jeweller to have it cut off.

I used to work for BeaverBrooks and if they cut your ring off they would reduce the cost of having it put back together.

This happened to me on holiday last year! Mercury was used to help it off..i say no more!

raise your hands over your head and pull you ring then with hands still over your head, it should come off.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have been out this morning at the library with ds but will start trying out your suggestions. I do actually have some haemoirroid cream somewhere. That sounds like quite a good one. I will try the ice thing again as I dont think i tried hard enough. Its very hard not to tug.

I havent tried butter or vaseline but I fear its too far advanced. I feel very stupid!

fairy washing up liquid

Have tried washing up liquid. Have tried butter. Now feel that its even more swollen. May have to wait until tomorrow to try ice again. if I can find the haemorroid cream, I.ll try that!

try and pull it off with hand aleady in water.

also try and twist it off - don't just pull it straight - this should it help it get over the knuckle bit easier.

Can you get someone to hold you finger at the base and pull the ring at the same time? They can stop the loose flesh moving up with the ring.

The longer you leave it, the more swollen it is going to get. I used to work in H Samuels and I have cut loads of rings off. I've also seen people with rings cutting into their fingers because they couldn't get them off and left them for a long time.

When the ring is cut off, there is no way of knowing if you are going to cut through the hallmark. There is no problem getting the ring repaired after and it isn't noticeable but if the hallmark is cut through, you would have to pay extra to have it stamped again (thats if you wanted the hallmark there).

I had this on my last pregnancy, left it too late etc. However I just left the rings on as they were not causing any pressure on my finger (i.e. sitting in their own 'groove' but unable to pass over knuckle. If this is the case with you I would say leave it, not long to go. If they are causing pressure or pain though, best thing os to get them cut off professionally. I really hurt my finger trying all the suggestions (esp the thread one - almost split my skin - ouch!)

I swelled up towards the end of my pregnancy and didnt pay much attention to my rings, but when i had ds two weeks ago they were really driving me mad during labour so i asked hubby to get them off. He eventually managed to get all of them off apart from my wedding ring - we even tried the jelly stuff they use for scans! It was pretty funny actually as in between contractions when the mw was out of the room I was using my gas and air to stop the pain of hubby pulling his hardest to get it off!!

Even when they whisked me to theatre for my emergency section the doctors etc couldnt shift it! They covered it with tape and its still stuck now!

I still havent tried ice. Ive been feeling quite crap all day and as dh took ds out to see his parents I have taken the opp to do a lot of snoozing. I did put a load of ice trays in freezer last night with a view to doing the freezing my hand suggestion - I was trying to figure out whether my finger will last another week and I might get away with the rings at the base of my finger. Miffy 2 I seem to feel pressue in the afternoon/evening. CrazyDi your story made me laugh! Oh I really dont want to have to go and have them cut off. The hall mark thing is important cos they had a special hallmark for millenium yr. I will keep you updated. I cant face the thought of labour and having my finger approached with a saw!! I'll just go and have another piece of cake instead!!!
