Spotting at about 9wks - don't know what to do

Hi, this is my first post. I was waiting to see midwife before I joined.

I'm just over 9wks and found dark browny-red blood mucus when I wiped this morning (wiped three times and got residue on tissue each time). This is the first time I've had any spotting at all.

I haven't yet even got an appointment to see a midwife so don;t know who she is yet. Currently waiting for NHS Direct to call me back. No cramps.

I'm worried - don't know if this is normal or what to do if it isn't.

Can anyone advise.

I've been told to wait 24 hours and see if things get worse. This is very hard.

Hi sorry to hear you are going through this worry. Another lady recently had a thread about bleeding at 9 weeks and she had a scan and saw baby's heartbeat, see if you can find it. I also had brown spotting at 9+2 and baby was fine (now 14 weeks).

Do you have an early pregnancy assessment unit near you? Some of them you can self- refer to, some of them you need your GP to refer you to (mine your GP can refer you to if you are bleeding at all). They can give you an early scan to see what's happening. Bleeding in early pregnancy is not normal but it is very common and can often turn out to be nothing.

I'm sure if you phone your GP and tell them you are bleeding, they will refer you for a scan - I did this recently and got scanned the next day.

Darker blood is better than red blood and if you've no experienced any cramping, it might be just one of those things. There is no "normal" I'm afraid - all pregnancies are different.

Easier said than done but just try to relax - there is nothing you can do to influence the outcome so work on getting some answers as soon as you can.

Is this the week your period would be due - as I have been told that some women spot then with no problems. try not to worry, look after yourself and as suggested call your GP as I am sure they will arrange a scan for you quick smart so you don't have to go through all this worrying.

I am having the same sort of thing. Bleeding at 6 weeks with period like cramps and pains. My GP referred me to the Eary Pregnancy Unit and had a scan which was all fine. The bleeding started again on Tuesday but more heavily this time. I had a number for my local midwife team so phoned them and they have again referred me to EPU so I am having another scan tomorrw.

It is a very worrying time but a friend said she bled with 2 of her children. I have had a miscarraige previously and that was totally different to this. If you only have bleeding and no pain or clots it should be ok. Try to get an early scan to reassure you.

I was going to wait for the 24 hrs as directed but phoned my GP who is not treating it lightly at all. She's organised me an appointment at early pregnancy unit for a scan this afternoon - so at least I won't be going crazy with anxiety. Thanks for the support.

I had some bleeding beginning of last week, had a scan on Tues last week, everything looked OK although it was still early days. We have our second scan tomorrow morning.

I have read that it can be normal to have some brown spotting at the 5 to 6 week mark which I have had for the last 5 days. I am coming up to the end of the 6th week and have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow. I am a little worried however as I have had period pain symptoms for the last 5 days and yesterday the brown blood became red blood and the quantity increased. Also the period pain symptoms today are quite severe. This is my first pregnancy and I am in a foreign country so don´t have to many people to speak to. If you are getting early symptoms of a miscarriage is there anything the doctors can do anyway or do you simply have to cross your fingers?

Monrat - there is nothing at all you can do to stop this - a miscarriage is usually predetermind when sperm meets egg, especially if the cause is a chromosomal abnormality. Most of these things are just back luck.

From what you describe, unfortunately it does sound like the start of a mc. Miracles can happen - it is possible to conceive twins and lose one - but I don't want to give you false hope.

Unfortunately the scan was not good. It looks as if my baby died at 6 weeks. I have to go in for another scan next week just to double check but have been told not to have false hope. If I don't miscarry naturally they discuss what next at that stage. I still haven't experienced cramps and am in total shock. But thanks for the messages of support.

Oh I'm so sorry to read this, I really hoped things were going to turn out well for you. If you haven't looked already, the miscarriage section of these boards is very supportive. I even found it helpful just reading that other people had been through same as me when I lost a baby at 17 weeks. Take care of yourself, I hope the miscarriage process is as gentle on you as possible, and make sure you get plenty of support in real life as well as on here.

Thank you Owlingate - found the miscarriage link and its already given me a lot more practical advice which, although hard to hear, is helpful. It must have been heartbreaking to go through this at 17 weeks. x

Well I had the ultrasound yesterday morning but whist waiting for the doctor I had a lot of blood and then when he finished. The 3 egg yoke sacks are still in there but have not implanted or developed to the next stage. He says if I continue to bleed the way I have been it won´t be good but if it stops there is a chance it might be ok. I did have IVF so there were 3 fertilised eggs put in. With only having 3 eggs he said there was only a 10% chance that one of the eggs would develp`to the blastocyst stage and implant. Well I have found that lying down a lot reduces the amount of bleeding. So I will now have to see whether the bleeding stops. Still in limbo fo another 5 days or so to see whether it goes through. I have heard that some people actually bleed almost their whole pregnancy so who knows.

I guess it is a bit of a lucky dip.
