bit of a dumb question about hiccups and kicks

Can everyone tell the difference? How obviously hiccups are the hiccups?

I think I'm getting hiccups but I'm not sure...

The hiccups I feel, or what I think are hiccups, are like constant little kicks. They usually seem to be about 5 seconds apart for a good few minutes, whereas a kick will just be a random kick or two, and then no more.

There was always more of a pattern to hiccouphs, and I could feel them in my whole stomach.

Kicks were more random and more localised.

Oh, and if you have a hiccouph-y baby in utero, they will be hiccough-y when they are born! And very amused by it if my daughter is anything to go by...

Aw Polksalad, that's so sweet. So there's no truth that lots of hiccupping might mean the baby's distressed?

I've never heard that tbh. But my mw and consultant were always ammused and said it was very normal.

In fact, my nephew was always bothered by his hiccoughs, and hadn't done it when my sil was carrying him, so maybe it's a good thing.

Oh good. I'm a terrible one for obsessing .

I'm 27 weeks and mainly I feel like there's a big wet fish flapping around inside me...

makipuppy, I'm 27 weeks too and was wondering the same thing! I am getting this weird quivering feeling sometimes and wondered if that was hiccups. Not strong enough that it feels like he's moving around, and not the same as the kicks.

I totally freaked out the first time I felt the hiccups, I thought baby was having a fit or something. Never felt them in my 1st pregnancy so have learned something new this time round!

I had the weird quivering. It seems to have stopped now (I'm 38 weeks) but I looked it up and found lots of other mumsnetters had experienced it, which was reassuring!

Staylucky do you mind me asking, did you know straight away they were hiccups?

Okay so the quivering isn't hiccups? Wonder what it is then! mogwai, in your conversations did anyone have any theories or figure it out?

maki, love your description of 'big wet fish flapping'....that's exactly what it feels like when he turns around.

Makipuppy No like I say I was freaking out for about two days! The interweb is great though and I found loads of threads on here with ladies describing exactly what I was feeling.

Have had a baby who did hiccups, kicks and quivers!

Hiccups are like little "tics" or taps but are, like others have said, very rhythmic and only last around 5 mins at a time, just like us.

My baby DS gets quite a few hiccups now he's 4mo and it generally sends him into fits of giggles which is lovely! He's completely healthy BTW.

He also did the funny quivers thing which I found very wierd, it felt like a mini fit for want of a better description, like someone whisking an egg in there ie very very fast movements, too fast to be kicks. Again - no explanation and as I've said he is healthy in every way so it was just one of those things!

Kicks - very definate thuds and thumps, unmistakable the bigger you/baby gets!

Enjoy... I kinda miss the hiccups and kicks and when I have wind it takes me back, in a nice way!

DD was very hiccuppy in utero... and she still gets hiccups frequently- every time she laughs actually!

I always thought the quivery thing was her moving. Very different to a kick if I remember rightly.

Hiccups are very obviously hiccups! You will know straight away.

Quivering I get too but not entirely sure what it is he's doing in there.

Some people get 'clicking' too.

My dd hiccuped pretty much every day when I was pg with her (once I could feel her although she may have been hiccuping when she was teeny too...). She was a happy healthy baby who goes into Year 2 in September where has the time gone?!!
