Hi
I have just found out I'm 4-5 weeks pregnant. Can anyone please advise me when I should make an appointment at my local surgery? And do I do this with a GP or nurse or midwife?
Thanks for any advice.

Congratulations

I think it's quite usual to see the doctor first but tbh, all they do is ask if you want to continue with the pg and then get their wheely thing out to check your due date, which, if you're anything like me, you've already got from at least 8 different online calculators anyway

I would ring your surgery and ask as it might be that you just arrange an appointment with the midwife. They will arrange things like scans etc at the hospital when needed.

Congratulations!
Call up surgery reception and ask for a MW appointment, and tell them how far along you are - they'll book you in for the right date.

Congratulations! Ring your surgery ,you can normally book in directly with the midwife without seeing the GP, they will tell you exactly but you normally have a booking in around 8-10 weeks.

Good luck!

I rang my gp's surgery this time and they got the midwife to phone me. In previous pregnancies I made a GP appointment first but they didn't bother to do any tests once they heard a home test came up positive, so it was really a waste of time.

They probably won't want to book you until 8-10 weeks, though.

I saw the doctor with no 1 who asked if I was taking folic acid and then said "well make an appointment to see the Midwife. It's a natural thing, pregnancy"
even more that I'd been sat there desperate for the loo as I thought I needed a full bladder

Are you taking folic acid? If not, start!

Everyone posted at once!

And you will probably also have to make an appointment for blood tests to check your iron levels, HIV status, etc etc.

Hi All
Thanks so much for quick responses and advice, I'm working from home on Friday, so I can call the surgery then.

you do know about folic acid don;t you? Sure you do but if there's any chance you don't it's worth me checking

namechangerforareason · 20/05/2009 14:31

Congrats!

Ring and ask receptionist in first instance if you need to see GP or can just book in with midwife.

Take folic acid daily, and enjoy your pregnancy.

Congratulations again!

Now you sit back and eat biscuits guilt free.

Oh yeah.

Biscuits.

Congrats on the baby

bluespix77 · 20/05/2009 15:11

Thanks all. And yes I'm on the folic acid. Am excited about all of the biscuits! It is hard also not telling any one! Last night I had to attend a work do, I held the same glass of champagne for about 2 hours drinking about a 1/4 of the glass otherwise people would get suspicious!

lol What a shame - I only ever seem to get given champagne when I'm in the early stages of pregnancy!

stillstanding · 20/05/2009 15:54

Congratulations, bluepix - I'm very jealous! One thing I would say that - where I live at least - it is really important to get an appointment with the gp as soon as you find out in order to get a place at the hospital that you want.

Laura233 · 20/05/2009 20:14

Congratulations!!

I found out I am 4-5 weeks pregnant too yesterday... is this your first? It is mine, and I am nervous to say the least, but I am trying to relax!!

Congrats bluespix, and welcome to MN (I assume you're new? Haven't seen you around but then I'm not TTC atm so we might not have bumped into each other) - the next step is to find your antenatal chat thread (Jan 2010?) and get utterly addicted to this site

dogrilla · 22/05/2009 22:34

Me too! Got a positive test this morning. Guessing I am about four weeks. Have sore boobs and cramps but not tired yet. Not sure that to do next...
