Hi,

Just wanted to know of others experience of this. My daughter has had a bad cold and cough the past few days and now has some pink spots, which I'm now guessing is chickenpox (a few in her nursery class have been off with it).

I am 19 weeks pregnant and had chickenpox as a child but I am really paranoid. I have read that it is rare for someone to get it twice (my mum has had it twice), so am I being really silly?

I been on NHS direct and it advised to phone GP, which I have done (waiting for a phone call back)

Both my dss had chicken pox when I was pregnant with dd. I contacted my gp as I could not remember having it. He told me it wouldn't matter even if I caught it. This was a while ago and I now know this advice is completely false. It does indeed matter if you catch chicken pox during pregnancy. I have a friend whose ds has sn caused by her contracting cp at 20 weeks.
That said as you have had cp it is very unlikely that you will catch it. My friend had never had chicken pox. You can get it twice but the vast majority of people are immune after one dose. You've done the right thing contacting your gp but I think you'll be fine.
Good luck and I hope your dd is better soon.

If you have had CP you will be fine but if you are unsure then you need blood tests to confirm either way.

Your gp will give you a blood test to test your immunity to it.
If you have already had it, then you will 99% be fine. There are a few people like me around who cannot develop immunity to it and get it multiple times which makes pg terrifying, but you would probably know if you had no immunity to it by now becasue like me you would have caught it several times by adulthood.
Tbh, I don't think you need to worry about it. Also, the worst time to get it is the first trimester or the last 2 weeks so even if you were as odd as me the baby would be pretty safe.

Thanks for the replies.

My GP did phone me and said that if I had caught it before, then it would probably be unlikely to get it again. He also gave the same advice as you nickytwotimes, that as I have passed my first trimester it should be okay. He said I should only go in if I do start to get some spots.

Still can't help but worry though.
