Can I make an appointment with a nurse and get one, or do I have to spend £10 (or however much they are now, it's been 10 years...).

Think a pharmacist can do one. You can get something like 5 tests for £2 on ebay, completely reliable tests just without the fancy packaging. TK Diagnostics make them. Poundland do pg tests too.

fartmeistergeneral · 12/05/2009 19:08

5 for £2?! I only need one to confirm my fears! Also, need one NOW, rather than wait for ebay to post out. Don't you get them at the docs then? My dh says you can. Am scared to find out. Am 40.

docs do them and family planning clinic

Ewe · 12/05/2009 19:11

Yes you can get them done at the GP but they won't just give you a test, you will pee in a pot and the GP will dip a stick in and tell you. If you don't mind being with a GP or nurse whilst you find out it is a free way to get a pregnancy test.

Personally I would get a cheapie from poundland or Tesco to spare myself having to find out in front of someone!

Ewe · 12/05/2009 19:12

Oh and if you need one NOW wouldn't it be better just to buy a cheap one? Surely you can't get a docs appointment this evening and you'll be lucky to get one for tomorrow now I should think.

ilovesprouts · 12/05/2009 19:12

if u have one at the docs it takes a few days to come back go to the £1 shop i did and the gap between mine was 14.6 years i was 38.6 when i had my son

fartmeistergeneral · 12/05/2009 19:17

I know what you mean, would rather be on my own to find out. Sure I can't be pg, came off pill in Jan and have had 3 normal periods and then nothing. Have used condoms faithfully. Am either 1 1/2 weeks late or 2 1/2 weeks late. Got a bit mixed up with my dates, but am late nonetheless. Would be terrified to be pg at 40.

I had mine done at the docs, she did it herself and told me so it was instant results.

booyhoo · 12/05/2009 19:37

my doc did mine and it took about two/three mins for result.

ilovesprouts · 12/05/2009 19:40

why would you be terrified to be pg at 40 ?

Castiel · 12/05/2009 19:46

The TK diagnostics ones on ebay post straight away so they are with you very, very quickly. And the beauty of having a couple of tests or 5 is that if you have a faint line or you don't know if it appeared in time or you mess it up or you need to confirm, there's another test right there.

Most supermarkets do a double pack for a few pounds too.

I'm 28 and I would be terrified to be pg.

fartmeistergeneral · 12/05/2009 19:48

ilovesprouts, terrified, cos I thought I had had my family (10 yo and an 8 yo). Terrified in case something goes wrong with me or the baby. Terrified to have to start all over again just when we were getting our lives semi normal and I had got a job. Ahhh!!!! Need to get a test. Will buy one tomorrow no matter what....

FP Nurse did a dip stick test which was positive then sent off a sample.

I did one at home first which was pretty cheap from boots

ilovesprouts · 12/05/2009 21:10

yes i know what u mean i was 38 when i had my youngest and they are now ds1 19.dd1 16 ds2 29months i did not expect to have him but got married oct o5 and he was born dec 06 hes got a few sn but i would not be whithout him and some people say your more paitent when you are older let me know how you get on

wrigglershouse · 12/05/2009 21:22

The tests which are available at the shops nawadays are just as reliable as those done by doctors therefore most surgeries only keep a couple for emergencies such as women who have collapsed with abdominal pain and could have ectopics. In most cases GPs will send a urine sample to the lab and therefore it will be overnight before you get results.

Asda do 2 for £1 and most pound shops have a similar deal as well as supermarkets. You will probably get an answer to your question quicker going that way as well as the privacy factor and the possibility of doing several if you don't believe the first one!

I hope you get the answe you are hoping for...
