Is this thrush? Beware - a little graphic

Hello all,

i need a bit of advice, sorry i'll just take a big breath and be graphic

for the last few days i have had an itchy fanjo, not the actual vagina, it's the lips, at the very front, in the v where they part if you know what i mean.

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing an increase in discharge (sorry), not sure if the itch is because it's a bit soggy (sorry) down there or if it's thrush as i've never had it before and was under the impression that that would make my vagina itchy rather than the external bits?

Thrush can be internal and/or external however I never notice the internal sypmtoms I would tell your doctor you have internal and external thrush as its no good treating one without the other, or it will just come back. Hope this helps.

You can self medicate for Thrush even when pregnant.If you do treat it and its not Thrush,it wont hurt you,and at least you'll have ruled that out if you do go to the docs,and if it is that...Problem solved.

The pessary is safe to insert,and the cream will soothe the itching,if thats the cause.

If you are worried to do this,check with your MW.

so is there any way to know for sure it's thrush? or is the fact it itches enough to assume it is?

oh and do i need the dr or the midwife or just some cream from the pharmacy?

You don't need the doctor or mw to medicate. You can use pessary and clotrimazole cream. Providing you have not had any other issues like water leaking or any other problems to do with your cervix. Your doctor probably won't do any exam though he will probably just prescribe it I get prescriptions free.

It does sound like thrush and is most likely to be while pg. But as the other poster said the treatment won't harm.

good-o, i hadn't even thought of treating it as thrush and seeing if it cleared up, i must have a wooley pregnant brain after all.

is thrush quite common in pregnancy then? are you more prone to it? and if you've had it once will you continue to get it on and off? or am i mixing it up with herpes ?

I think it´s pretty common during pregnancy. I had it for about 5 months until I gave birth. Miserable!

It is pretty common in pg. Since I had it once while pg I have had it about four times might be due to bf though. To stop it coming back while you are pg avoid tight clothing and perfumed bath products. Wear cotton knickers this usually stops it coming back thongs are a no no. Thrush is mostly caused by a change in hormones eg pg or puberty. Hope it clears up soon.

Go to your pharmasist and sign up for the minor ailments scheme (free of charge) and then they can prescribe cream for you at no charge - just like the GP. Anyone that doesnt pay for prescriptions can use the service. I always go there first for things instead of attempting to get an appointment with GP
