I think 4 times a day, for about a week before. Keep taking after for as long as needed.

Pure aloe vera gel with tea tree is really good for healing the wound after the dressing comes off, use it twice a day.

after surgery. It's not something that you can build up in your system in advance.

Didnt really read OP properly
I took it a week before section, but it was unplanned. I was taking them from my due date onwards (was convinced I'd do into labour at any second, ha!). So the fact that I was taking arnica for a week before the section was not intentional as such (does that make sense?)

Make sure you take 200 strengh. They is also hypercium which is good to take, again 200. They work well together. Im not sure how long before, but ring helios they are very goog at giving advice and you can order direct from them as you may find it difficult to get the stronger strenghs at the shops.

yes to hypericum too. I sadly only got into homeopathy 8m after my (unplanned) c-section

I took it a couple of hours before emerg c-section with ds2, and anaesthetic didn't take well. A homoeopath told me later she'd heard of this before. Might be nonsense, but worth checking out? I wouldn't wish it on anyone. All 3 of mine were emerg c's, and only had this problem when I took arnica beforehand.

I'm new to homeopathy and by no means an expert but my understanding is that it can be used constitutionally - eg for a long standing issue be that health or well being for example I have had a constitutional rememdy for migraines.
It can also be used for first aid. For example you bang your thumb with a hammer and you take arnica to help with the bruising.
I frequently give chamomilla to my DD for teething but I wouldn't give it to her in anticipation of her waking in the night because her teeth were bothering her. I would wait for symptoms - red cheek, dribbles, unsettled/crying.
I can't see why you would take arnica in advance TBH
