Hello! Sorry if I am being dense but I get seem to find a dedicated contraception section on MN so this seemed like a good place to post

I am seriously thinking about buying a Persona kit. Have two DC, youngest 11 months, family complete. However, both DH and I hate condoms and for several major reasons, I am adamant I won't go on the pill for the next 20 years. I am equally very suspicious of the mirena coil having read up on it and the traditional one is out as I have super heavy periods anyway.

Soooo, plan is eventually for DH to get the old snip but he wants to wait two years till he's 40 as it's such a major step for him. I feel I have done my bit having had two babies and two m/c and so don't really think it is fair that I should get sterilised!!

We were thinking of using Persona for the next years till he had vasectomy. I've read up and I know it's only 96% reliable i.e 4 couples out of 100 get pregnant every year having unprotected sex on a "green day"

What do you think ladies? I definitely do NOT want any more DC, DH has admitted he would be fine with 3 but totally accepts my decision to stick to 2.

Is it too risky? Feel free to bombard me with your "I used Persona and am now pregnant with twins" disaster stories!!!

Love BB x

I used Persona as contraception for a year and it worked fine and was very easy. I did become pregnant only because I had sex on a red day deliberately we wanted ttc and I figured the red days must be the days you ovulate - hence ds. But it worked perfectly as contraception.

Newb · 03/05/2009 21:46

I used it as contraception for 3 years then deliberately ttc using the red days which worked second month both times. I've heard it's most reliable if you have a generally regular and predictable cycle, also the green days after the ovulation sign appeared I've heard are safer than the green days before it - as you know you've definitely already ovulated.

I thought it was brilliant.

pearlsbeforeswine · 03/05/2009 21:48

I used a persona for a number of years with no problems.

nkf · 03/05/2009 21:51

I think it has a higher rate of failure than 4% but I'm not sure.

I've used it. I think it's great contraception if you wouldn't really mind getting pregnant.

lou031205 · 03/05/2009 22:02

The failure rate is actually 6%, according to their website, which is 1 in 17.

I used it for a couple of years. It only 'failed' when I had sex on day 12 of my cycle, then checked the monitor, which showed a red day with egg symbol. Result - DD1. So actually bang on accurate.

Used it actively to conceive DD2.

Have now had DD3 and will be using it again when periods return.

It does say that it is not suitable if pregnancy is unacceptable to you though.

I wonder if the 6% of people are just a bit thick.

or colour blind, or just sex addicts

I used it for contraception (and later for ttc) and thought it was really good. It does get expensive though wth having to buy the test sticks every month. Charting your temperatures is a lot cheaper but more hassly.

Hi BB,

Just wanted to say after reading your post that I had the Mirena coil in total had 3, one after the other, my experience was brilliant, I had no periods at all during the time I had it and it was fantastic not having to worry about anything as it last for 4/5 years per coil. I know everyone is different etc etc but I would really recommend it.

What was it you read that put you off???

Sorry cant comment on the persona, and maybe I will look like a right blonde now lol.... I hadn't heard of it :-/ lol

mum2boys2girls · 05/05/2009 13:42

I have used the persona as contraception for the last five years also used to help me concieve my last two babies

basilbrush · 06/05/2009 12:08

Hmm....am surprised I've got so many positive responses, thought I would be inundated with "Don't touch Persona with a barge pole" type replies!

I think I will give it a go and be Super Cautious, maybe treating the two green days before my usual red days as red too i.e to reduce risk of getting PG cos I ovulate early.

I appreciate this would only work if my cycle were the same every month - do you tend to find that you nearly always have the same red days, e.g days 9-15? Or does it vary wildly from woman to woman?

Also can you only buy the sticks in Boots or can you get them from big supermarkets / online?? Resorted to going to supermarkets miles away to buy PG tests as didn't want to bump into my sixth formers in the chemists in town!!

Wlll I don't think I'm thick or colour blind, but after two years of use I was pg with dd... My periods have never been super regular though, and we knew we were going to start ttc in a couple of months so maybe weren't being as careful as we had been when it mattered more.
