Did anyone have excess salivation in early pregnancy?

Tell me I am being daft and it is all in my head!

Had 2 hours sleep last night due to ridiculous salivation problems, kept swallowing, which in turn made me unable to sleep. I am full of cold though which started 2 days ago so wondered if it could be down to that?

I am nauseous (again, thinking maybe cold related?) and have tender breasts but I guess this could be a sign of ovulating/premenstrual.

It's too early for me to test as I am not due on for another week but there is every possibility I am pregnant as we are TTC and have casually been for 2 years now.

Just wondered if anyone else had the whole saliva thing going on - can't remember if it is that common with a cold or not, I don't remember it being so.

I also can't remember if I felt this with ds

Not me, but a friend of mine used to have to carry a spitoon round with her everywhere! it is a common (ish) symptom! xx

I did-the sheer amount and the foul taste made me very sick-20times a day for a while

I think it is quite common especially with morning sickness.

I'm much better now but still have more than normal.....

Well, I haven't been sick, very very nearly was last night but have a bit of a vomit phobia so tried to ward it off. Sorry if tmi but wondering whether the nausea is due to the amount of snotty gunk I'm swallowing. I do have a horrible taste in my mouth which I can't get rid of even with brushing my teeth but then you do get a manky mouth with colds too I suppose.

It makes no odds to me either way, obviously I would be over the moon if I was pg but its not the be all and end all at the moment - have a few heavy nights and hen dos coming up soon. In fact one said heavy night is tonight! Now do I not drink and make up excuses, would prob be the most responsible decision.

Didnt have it with DS1 but had it with DS2 - drooled like mad at night times. So took to sleeping on my side with a towel on my pillow so at least I got some sleep and didnt wake up in a pool of saliva. It stopped over night at about 6 months I think.

Yes I had that in early pregs too! Mouth was either sandpaper dry & wanting pints of water, or ridiculously dribbly so that I had to go and spit it out. The dribbles usually came with nausea.

All 3 pregs it went away after about 4 months.

Yes! Had it for the first 12 weeks or so, I'm now 40 weeks and it's started again. It is horrible and I sympathise hugely.

You produce more saliva when you feel nauseous, to (in theory) protect the teeth & tissues from the acid when you throw up.

Yes - had both of these early on in pregnancy with DS2.

Yeah, had the metalically taste with ds, mouth does taste horrid and pretty metally but I remember it being such a distinct taste with ds, not sure it's the same at the mo.

I hate this bit in between where you don't know and can't check. I have, in the past, had a tendancy to 'imagine' symptoms when have been desperate to be pg but, like I say, not so desperate at the mo. It was the sore boobs that got me thinking, and the fact I slept for 12 hours straight through from 7pm night before last - good job considering the lack of sleep last night!!

I'm also ridiculously emotional, can cry at the drop of a hat.

Oh well, no point speculating, just a waiting game I guess.

yes, it's vile. I'm 19 weeks and still struggling with it. The metal taste and the saliva is gross, in the evenings I have to keep a tea towel with me to spit into. I have found chewing gum helps a bit as I kind of don't notice the saliva as much. Mine then stops at night and goes the opposite way, I wake up with my mouth bone dry and my mouth coated with this kind of dry coating, can't describe it but it's all horrible. Didn't have this with either of my dd's so no idea how long it will last.

I have had this since 13weeks,constant dribbling & also had to have a towel with me to spit in.Really inconvenient.Never had it with first two.It's called ptyalism.But now at 29 weeks it's really eased off almost as soon as i hit the third trimester.I also found myself chewing gum all the time.

I had this in early pregnancy until week 13 when everything went away (now 33wks). I was never sick but the nausea and the excessive saliva would not leave me!

I found drinking cold water with some drops of lemon juice or a slice of lemon in it quite helpful, but maybe that was just me.
I totally sympathise and hope you find something to ease the symptom soon (it does sound you're very pregnant ), fingers crossed for you for when you take the test!

oh god yeah. now 16 weeks and still pretty spouting with spit. horrible!

Add a huge bloated tummy and weight gain of 3lb in a week - god, now I am hoping it is pregnancy and i'm not just getting really fat

I had this in both pregnancies. It was awful, used to carry a pint glass around with as it was constant and swallowing it just made me even sicker than I already was.

God makes me feel ill just thinking about it!!

Both my pregnancies started with snotty noses, lots of saliva. Used to sleep with a towel on my pillow. It was quite embarrasing dribbling on myself if I didn't concentrate

The excess salivation comes and goes now, don't get it as often. Strangely though I weighed myself on Wed of last week - was 10stone 12lbs - weighed myself this morning and now weigh 11stone 5lbs - same scales! Have had a meal out over the weekend but haven't consumed an excessive amount of food. Went to dh's mums yesterday and wore a huge baggy top as I def look like I have put on the above weight too! This can't possibly be a normal amount of weight to put on pregnant or not?!

Dh doesn't reckon I am pg (he is normally the intuitive one - not me!) So am kinda thinking I'm not, especially since the salivation has stopped. Maybe I am just getting fat Oh and still absolutely full of cold - lost my voice over the weekend!

I'm currently 33 weeks. Have been battling with this spitting issue since wk 25. It's so terrible, especially after every meal. My gynae could only offer the explanation of it being my body reaction to pregnancy. I live in Asia so am accessible to TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). The TCM physician advised that if there is too much stomach acid being produced during pregnancy, the acid would be converted and be expelled out as phlegm, mucus and saliva. That is very true in my case as my spitting doesn't usually only include saliva but could be a mixture of phlegm or mucus. I have tried gaviscon (an antacid) to reduce the acid and the spitting issue is much improved! I'm sharing this because I know how horrible this symptom is, especially throughout the night where sleep is disturbed. No harm trying some gaviscon mummies! Hope it helps you like how it has helped in my case!

I have this and it's horrible I wish there was a cure it's so embarrassing and depressing !

I havent had this thankfully! I did have excessive thirst in the early days. melancholymum - post Christmas bloat maybe?

Missed my periods early last month, did a preg test last week it had two lines where one was lighter than the other. Been peeing alot, dry mouth yet salivating frequently where i have to spit out every now and thn even at night. Could I be pregnant?

I didn’t have excess saliva until I was about 18 weeks and then I was dribbling like crazy!! I remember really hating my toothbrush going in my mouth just before I found out I was expecting!
