Did anyone get bad MS with DC1 but nothing with DC2?

Just found out yesterday I am pregnant. All a bit of a shock and though I am very pleased, it's really unexpected. I'm starting to stress now because I have just gone back to work to a job I love but which is crazy, crazy busy. Last time I had terrible morning sickness and the thought of it literally kept me awake last night. Please tell me that just because I had it last time, it doesn't mean it is inevitable this time and that I might be one of the lucky ones who avoids it... Please?

well can't promise anything but every pregnancy is different so you may feel things you din't last time and you may notice things that were there before are not this time. i am 16 week with number 2 and so far i am hating this 1, last time i had such an easy time no MS, nothing horrid like piles or varacous vains, but this time i haven't gone a day with vomiting and have low bp so can't work for a couple of weeks, you just cant tell so fingers crossed hope everthing goes well.

The 'every pregnancy is different' thing doesn't work if you had HG though. If it was just MS then yes,it may not be as bad. However if you had HG then chances are it will be at least as bad if not worse.

Sorry,I know it'snot what you wanted to hear but if you do suffer from HG, the earlier you get the meds the better.

hi i was bed bound on my ds for 7 months due to ms amongst other things but this time i only had
a touch of sickness between 6 and 20 weeks so much better and its mostly feeling sick on this one so u might b lucky

I had terrible morning sickness with DS1 and nothing with DS2. It was such a lovely surprise because I was all geared up for feeling sick all day and night (why is it called MS?).

Thanks for the replies everyone. Feel a fraud now because it was 'just' morning sickness last time (albeit all day) and not HG. I really feel for people who have that. But good to hear that it's not a given that I will get it again. Remind me; when does it usually start?

How bad does it have to be to be HG?
I started puking at about 7 weeks with DS and lost about 8 kilos as I just could not eat anything at all for weeks. i was off work for 3 weeks and did nothing but puke or feel nauseous. I think in the end i could manage nothing more than 1 pineapple ring and a dry cracker a day, but I was never hospitalised or had medication for it. Is this HG or just really bad MS? Would I be likely to get it again with a future pregnancy?

myredcardigan · 19/04/2009 15:46

Don't feel a fraud! It's not a competition to see who is the sickest. From being well all day to suddenly being sick all day isn't nice and isn't negated just because someone else is sicker!

Macaco, I was sick from about 4wks. Continually being sick until it was bile then bloody. Bedridden then hospitalised because I was dangerously dehydrated. No ability to even keep water down which is why it makes me laugh when people say ginger biscuits help. I was seriously ill and looked like a famine victim. I was lucky as mine stopped at about 5.5mths. I say stopped, but I continued to feel sick and be sick occasionally but not constantly and importantly,I could keep liquid and some food down.

I've had three though! It's worse second time because you know it's coming but I wanted another so much. Third was unplanned and actually I wasn't quite as bad and was only in hospital once.
Good luck.

Oh god MRC that sounds awful. Mine stopped at about 14 weeks but then i felt very nauseous for a further 3 weeks. You def had HG. I think mine perhaps was "only" MS. Hopefully that would mean it wouldn't necessarily happen with another pregnancy.

myredcardigan · 19/04/2009 17:02

Macaco, I've known other HG sufferers where it has stopped at 14wks so it could still be HG. Unfortunately, some women have it until they give birth and I've heard of women having terminations because they just couldn't take any more either physically or emotionally.

I don't think there's anything that distinguishes it from MS other than the severity. I stayed off the meds til 14wks first time but caved in at about 8wks second time. Managed without third time. TBH, the meds don't help anywhere near as much as being on a drip. It's amazing what a bit of hydration will do!

I had it pretty bad with DS, violently puking 4-5 times a day, throughout the day for three months. This time round (I'm 33 weeks now) I had 2 - 3 days of bad nausea, but then.... nothing.... I think I had my fair share last time. Hope you are that lucky too...

Reesie · 19/04/2009 20:11

I was sooooo ill with first pregnancy. Vomited most days for the whole duration of pregnancy. Some days I was sick 6-7 times. It finally stopped just after I gave birth .

I was on lots of antiemetics. Some days I couldn't keep anything down at all - other days I just had to keep grazing to stop myself being sick. I'm having horrible flashbacks just thinking about it. I was quite scared about ever getting pregnant again.

Lo and behold - second time around (currently 40 weeks and waiting patiently....) - I had a couple of dodgy days in the first trimester but have otherwise felt fantastic!
