and they said its a girl! i am 16 weeks +3 and they gave me a 90% - 95% girl. i still dont feel convinced, would u?? we already have boys so a girl would be lovely, although i'd be happy with either, just dont want to get used to the thought of a girl and then be disapointed if it turns out to be a boy.
what do u think?

you'd get a another scan later, so get them to double check. i think if the scan is unsure then your just told they cant tell. just get on and choose your daughters name!congrats!

SoupDragon · 16/04/2009 10:48

What was the point of asking if you aren't going to trust what they say??

There will always be cases where they get it wrong - it's not foolproof.

Mamazon · 16/04/2009 10:50

its more accurate if they say a girl than it is if they say boy apparaently.
because if they say boy there's a chance that they have mistaken the cord as his willie. iyswim

I was told at my 20 week it was probably a girl and have had to have another scan recently when the sex was reconfirmed, so it looks like you're going to be having a girl!

I thought they were more likely to get it wrong if they say it is a girl than a boy, but most cases they get it right. 95% sound pretty good odds to me!

Sonographer told us he was 85% sure he'd seen a penis. We can't be sure on that so we've decided to pay for a 4d scan. Scan is on Saturday so we should know for def then

tessofthedurbervilles · 16/04/2009 11:00

They say 90-95% to cover themselves incase its little wee wee was hiding. I think there were cases where people tried to sue when it was done wrong so they always say 90% to coveer themselves regardless.

GypsyMoth · 16/04/2009 11:04

it's the testicles that show up, not so much a penis tho!!

My last 2 babies (dad didn't want to know) I watched the scan and saw two White ovals. Testicles not kidneys! It was very obvious to me

mags98 · 16/04/2009 14:01

Yes it is more likely to be inaccurate if they say it is a girl. If you see the boys bits you can be pretty sure it is a boy, it can't really be anyting else! If you don't see them you are less sure - chances are still good it is a girl but there is always a possibility that the bits could be tucked between the legs and just not visible.

If they really aren't sure they usually won't say though.

keels26 · 16/04/2009 14:45

I was told at my 20 week scan that I was having a girl (85%), had to have a growth scan at 28 weeks pregnant and they told me 89% chance it was a girl. Baby had its ankles crossed both times and they said because they couldnt see anything there, that it was most likely to be a girl. Baby also had a wee during the scan and the way it trickled down was definitely the way a girl would wee.
And they were right she is a little girl! Apparently somebody was told they were having a girl and it turned out to be a boy so they sued the hospital! Think they have to give you a percentage to safe guard themselves.

worriedamy · 16/04/2009 15:11

I didn't think the testicles were anywhere near descended at 20ish weeks? In fact, doesn't it take up to a year for this to happen in some cases? Just thinking, if thats what you are trying to see, you might not be looking for the right thing...? Sorry if I am wrong though! In our case, it was a little willy the sonographer could see!! In fact, I think I might be right in saying that a girls bits can be that swollen sometimes because of the hormones etc etc that they could be confused with a little scrotum, so therefore a little willy would be more reliable!!
