How can I tell if my waters are leaking (unlikely) or if I'm pissing myself (likely)

I am 23 weeks and having wetness. I do have slight incontinence issues but usually only when actually weeing. This is involuntary and I don't feel anything until I feel the dampness.

What does the dampness smell like?

There is also another option (c) vaginal wetness. It increases in pregnancy. I'm 33 weeks and going through 2-3 thin panty liners a day.

Beetroot · 10/04/2009 17:15

smell?

Lizzylou · 10/04/2009 17:16

I had that with both pg's.
V embarrassing at work when I was pg with DS1. I always felt a little smelly and used pantyliners.
Just the extra pressure I think?

Great being a woman innit?

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 10/04/2009 17:16

smell?

Litmus paper (Urine is alkaline - waters aren't - is what they do in hosp).

I think there are also kits out there you can buy to test (saw one linked on here)

suwoo · 10/04/2009 17:17

Oh god, it get worse . What would it smell of? Have I read on here that waters can smell of semen? I reckon it is wee or secretions

Beetroot · 10/04/2009 17:19

wee will smell of...wee

suwoo · 10/04/2009 17:20

I really don't want to sniff though......

Waters are meant to smell quite sweet.

Beetroot · 10/04/2009 17:21

why = is your wee

suwoo · 10/04/2009 17:22

Eh?????

I would get checked out by MW or GP. They can easily find out if it's waters. Even if it's not, possibly it could be a UTI.

ilovemyoboe · 11/04/2009 16:06

I thought I was leaking earlier in pregnancy as it felt like 'it' was coming from the front. However, turned out to be huge amounts of discharge due to thrush!! No idea how it ended up at the front of the panty liner not the middle, but that's what it was. Sort of white/creamy.

My NCT antenatal class leader said that amniotic fluid doesn't smell at all so if it smells of anything it's either urine or an infection. Best to get it checked. Make sure you can describe it - quantity, smell, consistency (i.e. like water, slightly thicker etc.), colour.

suwoo · 12/04/2009 10:03

I don't think there is enough to describe it. I will study my panty liner then later.

Happy studying!

If you get the chance try and catch some of it in a pee pot and have it tested.

I had leaks from about 29 weeks and was told not to worry I was probably just weeing myself

However, I wasn't convinced and at 31 weeks caught some myself and took it to be examined and hey presto it was amniotic fluid. I had a scan and there was no fluid around DS . I was scanned every other day to check DS and had blood tests done every other day to check for infection. Also had steroid injection to mature DS's lungs. Went in to labour naturally at 34 weeks and DS was perfectly healthy.

You probably are just peeing yourself but check it out maybe.

suwoo · 12/04/2009 16:13

Just had some more earlier and I'm pretty sure its wee. had a little sniff

Thanks for your story Jaq, I think our instincts are usually correct aren't they.

You need to put on a pantyliner- then check what's in it. Yellow equals wee. Pink equals waters.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 12/04/2009 19:11

I had a leak in pregnancy with DS. I called the delivery suite and asked if it was just incontinience or a amniotic leak and they said (wrongly) that if was absorbed in a panty liner, then it wasn't a leak.

Supercherry is absolutely right...

hi

i think i'm having the same problem (very damp knickers all the time) and i've just put it down to increased discharge in pregnancy but now i'm worried as i've noticed it doesn't smell like urine. should i call the labour ward tomorrow morning or go to the antenatal clinic (btw i'm 30 weeks now)? and how are they going to check it, as it doesn't really drip out but sort of accumulates over time?
