12 wk Nuchal Scan - I thought you had to have a full bladder?!

I've got my 12 wk 'combined' (?) scan tomorrow and I rang the antenatal unit as my appointment letter had not info except the time and date. I thought you had to drink lots of water and have a full bladder for this but they said just to eat and drink normally.

Does anyone know if this is right?

I wouldn't normally doubt the hospital but the date on the letter was Dec 2008 so not sure how organised they are!

Thanks

I'm sure I had a full bladder for mine.

Didn't need a full bladder for the 20 week scan but did for the nuchal at 13 weeks.

i've never had to have a full bladder for mine (have had 3)

I've had 3 and never needed a full bladder. 20 wk scan i had to though.

They tell you to, but ime it is sufficient to have a bottle of water when you get there. Otherwise, they will inevitably be running late leaving you in a most compromising position. With ds I gave in and went to the toilet as my appointment was running so late. With dd my bladder was so full that I was told to go and have 'half a wee' And let me tell you, trying to stop yourself midstream when pg is no easy feat

It depends on the scanner quality. In the past you did need a full bladder, now depending on how good the scan machine is, you might not.

Should add my nuchals were all done privately as not available on nhs here and suspect the scanning equipment was better.

interesting, mine were NHS. but we must just have good scanners!

Thanks everyone - must admit I wasn't looking forward to having a giant watery bladder!
