Can someone please help? Early scan & Hcg levels

Hi everyone, i had a reassurance scan yesterday but am left far from reassured. My LMP date is very uncertain but i thought i was around 7 weeks. I initially had a tv scan that showed a 5 week gestation sac, unable to visualise a yolk sac or fetal pole. A few hours later a consultant re scanned and said he thought he could see a yolk sac within the gestation sac. My hcg levels are approx 6000 and are due to be repeated tomorrow. I am also having a further scan in 1 week. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks in anticipation of any replies x

Hi Rachel

I haven't had exactly what you describe but have had a few early scans/ HCG tests over the last year.

HCG levels are tricky things. What is considered normal at any particular gestation is a very wide range and so really what is important is the complete picture -that they are doubling normally over time and scan results.

As for your scan, is it possible that you ovulated on, say, day 28 of your cycle and not day 14? If so, that might account for your discrepancy. FWIW, a scan at 5 weeks from LMP would show a sac and that's it. An experienced scanner might see a yolk, I suppose, but certainly my understanding is that at 5 weeks there isn't much to see.

Sorry, for spelling your name wrong .

And I hope your next scan is better. It does sound like your hospital are doing all the sensible things.

Sounds very familiar, there are loads of threads here with the same sort of question. Unfortunately there is no definite answer, if I took a straw pole of the results from people here who had scans at 7 weeks showing a 5 week gestation sac, I think you would get about half where the pregnancy failed and half that turned out totally ok. For me I had a similar situation to you, but had lover hcg levels and went on to have a beautiful daughter, so I had a positive outcome to a similar story to you. I hope you have a happy outcome too. Do let us know how the hcg and repeat scans turn out.

Thanks so much. I just feel so worried and i can't stop crying. It is v possible that i am just 5 weeks pregnant as i really am unsure of LMP. I will let you know what happens from here x

rachael I was sent for an early scan as it took 2 years to conceive. The MW and I thought I was 7 weeks and when they started to scan the whole room went silent, all they could see was an empty sac measuring only 5 weeks. The scan was done both abdominaly and TV and still could not see the fetal pole. I got blood take for HCG levels and sent home for further bloods to be taken 48 hours later and a further scan after 1 week. I went home and cried all day fearing the worst. My levels doubled after 48 hours and after 1 week they could see the fetal pole and a heartbeat. I am now 29 weeks pregnant with a lovely baby girl

Please keep hope and remain positive, esp if you are unsure of your dates and please let us know how you get on.

Sending love and hugs xx

Thank you so much for your kind words. I just keep praying that i am just 5 weeks. The only date i know for sure i had a period was new years eve so counting cycles from that it is v likely. Thanks again x
