Hello,
I am 8-9 weeks pregnant (a bit unsure as I haven't had a period since the birth of my DS 14months ago) but only had sex once so am pretty sure of my dates.
I have been spotting since the beginning and had an early scan at 6.5 weeks. All seemed OK although the embryo was measuring 5 weeks.

The bleeding has continued and today (at 8 weeks) the embryo is measuring under 7 weeks. It is 10mm and the sac is 10mm so much too small. There is a significant area of bleeding under the embryo and they have told me to go home and come back in another week. They have said it doesn't look good.

But I don't really understand it all. Can anyone decipher all of this??
Thanks in advance.
Sam

Poor you Clem. I am not a medic so would hate to comment on the sizes etc but I have to say if you are bleeding it doesn't sound good. It is unfortunate they are asking you to wait another week for a scan but they probably need to wait as the embryo is obviously still growing. I do hope this works out for you. I've been there and I know how horrendous it is waiting for an outcome.

Hi clem, I'm sorry this is happening to you. I bled with ds, then again in my last 2 pregnancies that ended in miscarriage. I'm now 18 weeks pregnant and again had spotting early in this pregnancy, but so far so good. I know this isn't very helpful, but it just goes to show, you can't really tell what's going to happen. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out ok.

The thing about the sac being small sounds similar to my first pregnancy.

I went to my GP and had blood tests because my boobs stopped hurting around 6 weeks. The tests showed my HCG levels were rising, but not doubling like they were supposed to. So I had an early scan at 6+5. They found a heartbeat, but the sonographer mentioned the sac was smaller than it should have been. They asked me to come back in a week.

I went home and started googling, and found a medical journal paper saying that a too-small sac was a good predictor of miscarriage. I didn't tell DH, but wish I had because at least I was sort of prepared when it happened---but he wasn't. I do wish the sonographer had told us it didn't look good. We were so happy about the heartbeat, maybe she just didn't want to spoil the moment.

I started having cramps at 7+0 with a bit of brown spotting, and then it got much worse at 7+1 and I miscarried that night at the EPU. It was all over pretty quickly, so I think I was lucky in that way.

I'm so sorry you're going through this and that you have to wait. Sometimes you don't miscarry naturally and you need medical intervention to help it along. It sounds like they are waiting to see what will happen.

Thank you for the messages. I think I have just read that medical journal Sarah. It doesn't look good, does it?

I'm really sorry, Clemette. I think it depends on your philosophy on such things...would you rather be hopeful and then disappointed, or would you rather prepare for the worst?

From my experience, I wish we'd have been warned. We'd gone into the scan expecting the worst, and came out feeling hopeful. Lots of people said to be hopeful because of the heartbeat, and they were right in a way---once a heartbeat is seen, the risk of miscarriage goes down significantly. I think it was a huge shock to see a heartbeat on Friday and miscarry on Monday.

No one really has the answers for you, and I'm so sorry you're having to sit in this limbo.

Hi there - I'm in a similar situation, so thinking of you with your wait.

I started spotting at the end of last week and went into the EPU Saturday morning for a scan that was inconclusive. The sac was just 20mm, with no heartbeat so they've told me to go back a week today.

My first pregnancy so it's all very strange and unsettling. Not sure how I'm going to fill this week, taking a couple of days off but might end up back at work just to distract myself.

I'm still spotting but only very slightly - not sure whether to take that as a good sign though? Trying to stay optimistic but prepare for the worst at the same time.

Flossie, how pregnant are you? If it helps I spotted for 12 weeks with my second and they weren't able to spot a heartbeat at the first scan (about 5 weeks). He is now 14 months and healthy.
Fingers crossed x

Hi Clemette

Thanks for your message - I'm 8 weeks according to LMP, but much more likely 6 weeks from when I think conception was and what they saw on the scan on Saturday.

So I'm keeping fingers and toes crossed for next Monday. Got them crossed for you too xx
