Maternity clothes - central London - Next, New Look etc...

Hi there. I'm going to London this week and really need to get some new maternity clothes. I've exhausted the shops near me - they're pretty rubbish! Anyway, I was looking online to find out which central London shops stock maternity lines. I really want to go to a Next but the only one I could find was at Westfields. Is that right?! I would have thought one of the ones on or off Oxford St would do maternity.

Also, I couldn't find a New Look that does them either. It's such a faff to find out too, you have to search store by store and then they list their sections... If anyone knows of anywhere, I'd be really grateful. Top Shop's no good as I'm a size 18.

Thanks. xx

Hi
Topshop at Oxfrord Circus and the H&M nearby just down Regent Street both do maternity wear..enjoy
(the Top Shop maternity section is actually just round the corner from the main entrance - doors also on Regent Street - north side)

MsG · 29/03/2009 13:19

Oh, I'll try H&M, thanks!

oh sorry missed the bit about Topshop not being any good...

MsG · 29/03/2009 13:20

That's OK! I think they only go up to a 16 but maybe I should check it out anyway. x

also the Gap on Oxford Street does maternity - it is further up near Bond Street tube
I think they do a reasonable range of sizes too

EffiePerine · 29/03/2009 13:24

Beware H&M maternity, the sizes do come up small. They have some nice stuff though. Gap on Oxford St has great stuff (it's their flagship store I think) and they are generous in their sizing too.

MsG · 29/03/2009 13:25

I'm off to Gap then. Thanks ladies!

still reckon H&M might be worth a try just cos I am not small and I have found some stuff really good - might depend on the garment?
good luck!

MsG · 29/03/2009 13:34

Cheers! I just want to find a few things so hopefully I'll be lucky.

You are right no Next or New Look in the centre of London carries maternity and I thought Topshop was very limited. M&S at Marble Arch has a good section as does mothercare and mamas and papas.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 29/03/2009 16:21

The benetton on the corner of oxford st and regents does maternity and there is a huge mamas and papas opposite. Topshop just around the corner. As someone else mentioned the gap shop on oxford street has a great selection and there's also a dotty p's almost next door. Oh and a mothercare half a block from there.

MsG · 30/03/2009 06:54

Thanks! I'll be checking out Gap, H&M, Mothercare, M&S and DPs...surely I'll find some things?!

It's the trousers in H&M that are just bizarre. Although my shape is that I have quite big thighs and the trousers are skinny on the leg so if you are differently shaped you may have more success. BUT make sure you go up a size whatever (but they do go up quite high).

When you find stuff to fit it's pretty good because that said I got most of my maternity clothes from there (including a couple of brilliant skirts for work)

lastboxoftampons · 30/03/2009 11:25

Actually, Next in Oxford Street does do maternity, but they only have about two racks. I found the selection to the best at H&M, but in general, I've found the in-store stocks of maternity clothes at most shops really lacking

New Look at Moorgate apparently does maternity, but I haven't been.

If ever you're down in the Clapham Junction area, there are lots of shops along Northcote Road - although, warning, it can get quite expensive!

BIOTB - I didn't realize Benneton did as well, interesting...

MsG · 30/03/2009 13:07

The selection in London has to be better than where I live though - a small town in East Yorkshire. There are NO shops who do maternity clothes here, and the nearest big town is pretty dire with just a few racks and limited range in sizes.

What do most people do?? Get their clothes online?

MsG - this is my first pregnancy, so I'm just finding my way through - but, yes, I've ordered most of my stuff online. I was really disappointed with what I found in the shops. I did the whole Oxford Street tour one day and came home with nothing. Granted, at the time, I wasn't really showing, it was just that my normal clothes were getting a bit tight, so a lot of what I did manage to find was not appropriate for my stage.

H&M has a proper section - an alcove set apart from the rest of the shop - where you might find a good amount. Topshop also has a separate section, but I thought it was incredibly expensive for what it was (mostly jeans and black tops) and not to my taste at all. Next had two racks. The Gap had a really good sale on (it was just after Christmas) but it was all confined to one portable wall type thing. Mamas and Papas had a good selection, but again very expensive IMO.

I think it depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you're looking for. A lot of what I found were styles that I wouldn't even consider when I wasn't pregnant. I ordered a few things online from the Blooming Marvelous sale and found their stuff to be the best quality and decent prices that I've found so far. But even when shopping online, I find that a lot of stuff is out of stock by the time you click on it!

Good luck!

PS: I feel like my post was just incredibly negative. Maybe others haven't had as much of an issue as I have! It's just that I've been really frustrated at not being able to walk into shops and pick what I like IYSWIM?

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 13:22

i thought the new look maternity clothes were a bit lacking
i did find some suitable stuff just in larger sizes however - their sizes go up quite a way, so you could just buy a bigger top etc, and things like yoga pants that fit under the bump don't need to be special maternity ones

agree h+m stuff very small - i would avoid if you are size 18

dorothy perkins have the odd decent bit

i walked round and round m+s trying to find the maternity section and gave up in the end! no-one could tell me where it was
they do sell stuff online however
plus vertbaudet and la redoute online things are good IMO

FrannyandZooey · 30/03/2009 13:23

oh debenhams have some stuff in red herring concession that are nice - not sure about sizes though
again try online

Scaredycat3000 · 30/03/2009 17:05

Been to New look @ moorgate, in the basement, cheap & cheerful. Sizes quite good, I think. Very busy at lunchtime. Be careful though alot of the tops are just their normal lines with a maternity label sewn in. Took back a jumper as was skin tight on my belly at 5 months!
Yes to Oxford circus, Mamas & Papas have half price sales and nice quality, H&M basement go up at least 2 sizes or more on trousers, Zara are nice, Debenhams also as above,Gap buy usual size, comfy! Hope you have the energy! Oh and if you're having any problems with bras pop into Bravissimo, 2(?) streets behind topshop and get a fitting!

MsG · 05/04/2009 17:48

Had a bit of a stressful time looking for clothes but I did manage to get 2 nice tops from H&M. I tried some trousers on in a size 22 and they didn't get past my hips!!

I've ordered some jeans from Next so will see what they're like. x

SabsBigPants · 06/04/2009 20:56

wanted to also add about new look in moorgate...i work near there and they have a good range of clothes and quite reasonable price...though only 1 pair of work trousers...also if you grab their magazine, they have a 20% voucher, which u can use till the 12th of april....H&M in regent st is also quite good, its a few shops after mama and papa's....
