I am just about to book mine. At the same clinic I had it done for dd in 2005.

But my sil told me she had her nuchal done at her 12 week booking scan. On the NHS.
She is in Bedford.

I will call my antenatel ward on monday to find out if our area is doing it on the NHS now.

Just wondered how many of you didn't have to pay.

I'm in West Herts, and they are training staff up to do it now. So I would have had to go private - but if I have a second, it will be free.

On NHS spending / policy - health is a devolved issue in Scotland, so the Scottish NHS has its own spending decisions, via the assembly. It is also devolved in Wales.

In England, it depends on the priorities of the Primary Care Trust. Which is why some of you have it and some of you don't.

Same goes for policy on telling you the gender at the 20 week scan. Or indeed, having a 20 week scan at all...

I had my last baby and this one under NHS Lanarkshire and was only offered the dating scan, no nuchal fold or anomaly scan. Previous two were with NHS Greater Glasgow (Southern General hospital) and same deal there, no nuchal fold or anomaly scan.

When I was pregnant with DS2 I actually wrote to every MSP and MP that covered me and the Southern General and the response was lacklustre to say the least. It appalls me that I pay my taxes the same as anybody in Edinburgh for example, 40 miles away, and they'll have a far superior standard of care to what I'll experience.

Lewisham, SE London (when was PG) - they did one at 11 weeks FOC but I am not sure if this was only for PG women over 35.

earthpixie · 05/04/2009 14:31

Paid almost 200 quid at the JR in Oxford two years ago. Think it's free now.

alittleteapot · 05/04/2009 14:42

hi, i got the nuchal scan free both times, first as part of integrated test, second as part of combined test. BUT, second time I got a high risk result (see my other thread about low PAPP-A) and went and had a private scan (£150) at the Fetal medicine Centre where they also scan for other markers including nasal bone and heart valve. In my case my risk was recalculated to be massively low. Point being nuchal is already out of date in terms of the thoroughness of scan you can have. But there seems to be an issue in terms of training sonographers to look at these other markers. I was shocked what a difference it made and has made me feel a bit about the whole screening palaver.

SydneyB · 05/04/2009 14:45

Free both times and am in Hackney. Second time around got combined test as well. Free.

DeborahBorr · 05/04/2009 15:28

I paid in NW in 2004 - think it was £130.00. No idea whether or not free now.

sharkyandgeorge · 05/04/2009 15:30

I am in Cambridgshire and our local hospital have just started free nuchal scans for everyone.

DeborahBorr · 05/04/2009 15:31

And I was 40 at the time - made no difference

CompareTheMeerkat · 05/04/2009 15:34

Am in Bedfordshire although had DS and DD at the Lister in Herts. With DS in 2003, no 12 week scan at all. With DD in 2005 there was a 12 week scan but I think you had to have nuchal privately.

Don't know what happens now.

beepbeep · 05/04/2009 16:04

Is now free in Oxfordshire (i paid for previous 2, and DS is only 9 months so pretty recent) they also combine it with the bloods so you get the results about a week after the scan. It's combined with what was the dating scan, they just try and do it around 12 weeks, so if dates out it means going back for nuchal.

WentworthMillerMad · 05/04/2009 16:40

I got mine free - I am in Glasgow but i chose to give birth at paisley maternity unit (Renfrewshire), mainly because of the amazing midwife led unit. I got my nuchal and 20 week scan.

Paisley was outstanding in every way by the way!!!!!

Agree with expatscot - no nuchal or 20 week scan in Glasgow although i think that is about to change.

Ps paid for my previous 2 nuchals at queen charlottes london

LizLemon · 05/04/2009 16:55

SE London - free nuchal at Kings that also looks at the nasal bone and heart, and takes blood results into account. But then it is a major research centre so you're often asked to take part in research at the same time.

vole3 · 05/04/2009 17:03

The sonographers have just finished training for them at the James Paget in Great Yarmouth.
I think the service is up and running, if not it will be in the next few weeks.
Point to remember with nuchal scans - you need to be sure of your dates as the measurement range is for a specific date range so if you are more than a week out it will not give an accurate result.

rizlated · 05/04/2009 17:55

free at the mayday in croydon in 2005& 2007

Flamesparrow · 05/04/2009 18:49

Free Bournemouth

cautiousmumtobe · 05/04/2009 19:41

Have to pay on the Wirral (Merseyside). Think its about £150.

LackingNicknameInspiration · 05/04/2009 19:58

I had my first in the Epping/Harlow area in 2007 and had to pay for a nuchal then - was 34 and I went to Holly House in Buckhurst Hill - got told there was then no point in having the free dating scan as it covered that (thus saving the NHS a bit of cash...). Now in Amersham, Bucks and have the choice of either free nuchal or standard dating scan - not age related either.

jmontan27 · 05/04/2009 20:12

I live in Greater London and have had free nuchal scans with all my kids, in 2002, 2005 and 2008. All done at Kings in London. Excellent service!

EightiesChick · 05/04/2009 20:23

In Merseyside you get scans at 12 and 20 weeks plus the triple blood test, but no nuchal. I assume you can have it if you pay but we didn't pursue that. This was in 2008.

lou031205 · 05/04/2009 21:07

Winchester give 12 week dating scan with or without nuchal at expectant mothers choice, alongside triple test if chosen, then 20 week anomaly scan. All free.

They started giving it in April 2007, and were doing the training when I was pregnant with DD2.

I declined the nuchal/bloods, but accepted the dating scan & anomaly scan.

MerryMarigold · 05/04/2009 21:08

We get it free here (E London) if you are over 35, but not before that.

thisisyesterday · 05/04/2009 21:09
