First appt with doc, did you take DH?

Hi all

This is a bit premature (nice preggo pun..) as I've not got my BFP yet (still waiting to TTC), but wondered if any of you took your DH to the GP with you when you got yours? I'd like my hubby to be there for the 'big' appointments and that seems like one of the big'uns! Would the GP think it odd?

the doc just refers you to a midwife, but dp did come to al the midwife appointments

It'll be a 2 minute - "congratulations and I'll refer you to the midwife" visit. You won't even really sit down!

Thanks Gagarin - possibly not worth the hubby taking time off then I guess... although might be a good opportunity to start draggin him round the pram shops

I think in many areas you can refer yourself to the midwife for an early booking - so no need to see the GP at all?

Anyone else know whether this is the case?

I did take him, but tbh, I wouldn't have if had known how quick it was. In the end I just took mine to the scans after that, had so many MW apps he couldn't take time off for them all.

WH, yes, will be v short visit and probably totally underwhelming for you. GPs have v little invovement in healthy pregnancies. In our practice patients now self-refer to the midwife so there is no real need to see GP at all. Lots of woman of course do, and lots do come with their significant other . So bring him along if you want, but it will not be v interesting appointment.

Scans, now that's a whole different story; daddies should defenitely be present for those

I didn't even see the GP, just a receptionist who filled out the stuff to refer me to the midwife. They didn't confirm the pregnancy, just took my word for it that I had a positive test (apparently they don't bother most of the time, according to other threads I've read).

If you've already tested at home, can't see the point of dragging DH to the GP! The exciting moment of finding out you're preggo will have already happened when you test at home.

I do take DH to midwife appointments and consultant appointments.

I haven't seen the GP at all this time (now 36 weeks). DH has come to the scans and that is it. Why take precious time off work before the baby when you will need him to be there as much as possible after? If there are problems then that's different of course..

With ds I went alone to all midwife appointments, but he came to scans and a consultant appointment. He couldn't really justify taking all that time off work and a lot of the early appointments are just form-filling.

Thanks all, I wondered if that was the case after reading some of the other threads here! Kind of a shame almost - I guess I have this storybook image of a Doc confirming the pg! Will let DH decide if it is scans or m/w appts too.. now just have to get that BFP....

Another q... if you don't see the doc, assume that means you don't get your due date 'confirmed' until you see the m/w? And I've heard from others that you don't get your m/w appt until 8 weeks, is that right? Guess that means you have to rely on preg math to get the EDD...[WH scratches head in maths related consternation]

as far as i know, these days they tend to go for the edd from your 12ish week scan, far more than your lmp date. luckily, mine were both the same...

It depends as to where you live. I'm near Bath and you don't see a midwife until 12 weeks but thats because you only get a 20 week nhs scan.

I've never taken DH to midwife/consultant appointments as they do tend to be rather dull. He did come to scans in first 2 pregnancies but hasn't in this my third pregnancy as was looking after our youngest. But then i'm a bit odd i guess as had c-section for number 2 without DH there although to be fair he was looking after DS1 and it was boxing day so couldn't easily leave him with friends.

went to see gp on friday and took dh as he isn't working at mo - hoping i can drag him along to first midwifes appointment but then if he gets a job i won't

I didn't take my husband and glad I didn't as I was only in with the GP for a couple of minutes.

As for the first booking in MW appointment, I am not sure I would take my DP either. It is quite boring - just filling out forms etc. But the midwife asks the standard question of you whether your partner has ever beaten you (apparently domestic violence increases with pregnancy, which absolutely stunned me) and it would be weird to have my partner there when I was asked that question. I wonder how the midwifes ask it when the partner is there...(off topic, I know)

My dp came to most of my ante-natal appointments during my first pregnancy. Doc's was very close to his work though so it wasn't a problem. He liked hearing the heartbeat each time.

How often you are seen by either MW or consultant or for scan obviously must depend an awful lot on where in the country you are.
I was not seen half as often as Starlight describes, not even after a fairly high risk pregnancy the last time (once if was confirmed I did NOT have placenta praevia again). Which was great, because it make the whole pregnancy seem more "normal".
A lot of being pregnant is just waiting for time to pass !!
Trust me, you do not want it to be too exciting (although of course it is).

Only took, dh to the scans with first baby. He came to one mw app. this time, only as he was on a day off, and wanted to hear the heartbeat. I wasn't seen by midwife till I was 16 weeks this time round, and think I have only seen her a handful of times since.

My DH only came to scans, tbh I couldn't think of anything worse than him trailing to all the MW appointments! I did ask him if he wanted to come and hear the HB, but he was always working and has heard it a couple of times though my tummy anyway now.

Thanks again folks! DH is putting on his v supportive face and saying 'whatever you want dear' (won't last ) but I think you are right - it will be up to him/when his work allows!

Hmm.. hope all this pre-preg daydreaming doesn't jinx me!
