Should I book my Nuchal scan BEFORE or AFTER my 12 week scan?

I am 10 + 3.

Scan is on the 7th of April.

Didn;t have this problem with dd as I had a NHS 8 week scan then because the mw knew I was having a private nuchal scan she didn't book me a 12 week scan. I kept quiet about the nuchal this time.

I was thinking of going to the NHS scan with just dh and then if everything is ok and there is deffo a baby there...we'll take the dc's to the nuchal scan. Does this plan sound like a good one??

thanks

optimal time for nuchal scan is between 11 and 13 weeks so book it now.

princessmel · 28/03/2009 08:35

ok, but shall I arrange it for after my 12 week scan? Or doesn't it matter?

I think it does not matter really
they are measuring different things

Nuchal one , is measuring nuchal fold, 12 week NHS scan is a dating scan to give you an estimated delivery date.

HTH

I'll book it when dh is home from work.

But [worried face]

You have to have it done before 13 weeks and 6 days.

Are you sure about taking your dc with you? What about if you are given bad news?

princessmel · 28/03/2009 08:48

Thats why I thought I'd go the nhs scan first with just dh.

You dont get any news at the nuchal scan do you? Not the finished result. They called me the next day for that last time.

hmmmm I think they would love to see thwe baby.

It depends - the place where I've booked the nuchal gets you to send in bloods in advance, so they can give you the figures in a neat print-out on the day. There's no waiting, and it's brilliant.

I'm actually really cross that the NHS does a dating scan (but not a nuchal) at twelve weeks here, because ideally, I'd like it earlier (at ten weeks or something) so I know that there's an alive foetus in there before I shell out £170 for the nuchal.

princessmel · 28/03/2009 08:58

Thats true. If we have the nhs one first then we know its all ok. Then we'll be happy to pay the money for the private nuchal one. I'll def book the nuchal one for after the nhs one.

Not nice thinking about money but we dont have loads to spare .

i had a nuchal scan first simply because the nhs one was so late. they then wouldnt let me have the nhs one as i had already had a scan

princessmel · 28/03/2009 10:04

How annoying,

Yes I haven't mentioned I'm having a nuchal scan.

Luckily the nhs one is within the dates for the nuchal one. So I'll just end up having two scans very close to each other.

Have you thought about what would happen if you get a high risk result? Are you sure you want to have the nuchal done?

I ask as I think many people have it done wtihout fully thinking of the consequences of high risk results. I do not mean to upset you in anyway. However, I got a high risk result previously and with this pg I have not had one done. Simply because I know I would not be able to go ahead with any further testing.

princessmel · 29/03/2009 10:00

Cece I have thought about it, thanks.
We didn't have one with ds and had the triple tests. I didn't know about nuchal scans then. I had a high risk result and ended up having an amnio.
Then with dd I had the nuchal scan.

I prefer to know as much as I can about the baby.

Personally, I had the nuchal first by a few days but I don't see it would matter that much if it was the other way around.

I would suggest that your dp/dh came to the nuchal one. It is a better scan machine, a longer scan and much more interesting than the NHS dating scan, although may vary in some areas. Our NHS scan was very disappointing, very short, poor image, 1 hour wait. The nuchal scan was 15-20mins long, excellent image, everything was talked through and explained, I got a CD etc.

Hi Daisy dh will be coming to all of them

I agree the nuchal one was better than the nhs one.
