Hi,

This sounds really stupid adn I may cringe later.

I'm six weeks pregant, with my first - which is really exciting.

Anyway I went to see GP yesterday who didn't really do much, just told me a midwife would call at 8 weeks and make an appointment to see me at home.

I wante dto ask a question, but she sort of shuffled me out quite quick so I'm going to ask it here and hope you don't all think I'm a complete lemon!

Here goes:

Does everyone get 2 scans at 12 and 20 weeks?
Or is this a local authorities discretion thing?

Told you it was stupid

Thanks for reading my waffle!

Yes, you will get two scans, one at your booking in at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks for anomalies. And there are no stupid questions!

princessmel · 28/03/2009 08:17

Hello

Not stupid atall.

I think it does depend where you live. I am getting a 12 and 20 week scan and my friend was surprised as she didn't get a 12 week one.

I think you'll just have to ask the midwife.

It is not a silly question so dont worry about asking it

congratulations btw.

fatandiknowit · 28/03/2009 08:18

Thank you - nice to see someone else is up early too!

afaik everyone gets a twenty week scan

and I have had a dating scan when I found out I was pregnant as I had no idea of my dates
I dont think everyone gets a 12 week scan

not a stupid question at all

and Congratulations

SomeMightSay · 28/03/2009 08:19

Yeah, with my 2 I was scanned at 12 weeks and again at 22 weeks. They are normally offered between 10-14 weeks and 19-24 weeks generally. I've not met anyone who has noy had these scans. You would have more scans if there were concerns ablout the baby/pregnancy for example, baby's weigh gain, if you were carrying twins+ and so on. Some people have a scan at 7 weeks if unsure of dates or if there has been bleeding, but if everything is ok, which it is most of the time, it is just those 2.

Congratulations and good luck

LittlePeanut · 28/03/2009 08:20

Blimey that's not stupid! For a minute there, I thought you were going to ask where the baby comes out!

Yes, as far as I know, everyone gets one at 12 and one at 20. This is standard.

fatandiknowit · 28/03/2009 08:21

Thanks everyone - it's really exciting but also pretty confusing at the moment as I'm not sure what order things are supposed to happen in yet.

We live on the broder of 2 NHS trusts and I have friends who live either side who have had diffferent exeriences - hence the confusion!

Hello FAIKI

It all sounds normal so far - midwife contacts at 8 weeks for booking in appointment where she fills out your green form with all your info and arranges the 12 week scan. I do know some LA's don't do the 12 week scan. You can get a private one done for about £90-£100 (depending where you are) though if you don't get one and really want one

You'll then get regular appointments with your midwife (probably about 6 weekly at first, then up to monthly, then 2 weekly nearer your due date) and she will book your 20 week scan at some point

Wallace · 28/03/2009 08:47

Not all places do a 20 week scan. Our area just does a 12 week one. Definitely not a stupid question!

linspins · 28/03/2009 09:14

Not a silly question, ask away on all sorts of things, Mumsnet has been a mine of information for me!
It will depend on where you live and also your medical history. They only do 20 wk round here but if you ask for a nuchal scan you can get one at 12 wks. if there are medical reasons you might need an early one you could get it too.
Here, if you are particularly worried you can often get a scan to put your mind at rest, they seem to be ok about that.

Good luck! xx

YesSirICanBoogie · 28/03/2009 11:18

Congratulations! Where I live everyone gets a 12 week scan and that's it - unless more scans are required for medical reasons. I think it can depend on your hospital as well as the local authority. I know people who have switched to the same hospital as me after their 20 week scan so they wouldn't have to pay for one.

MrsStig · 28/03/2009 11:24

Ha Ha! I'm sniggering that some one expecting a baby still thinks 8.15am is early.

logrrl · 28/03/2009 13:32

Hi
no 20 week scan here and no nuchal fold testing either. 12 week scan only.
p.s. the wonderful thing is that every question you can think of, someone will have asked it or will ask it over the course of your pregnancy. It's what makes MN so addictive!
