Anyone pregnant and still breastfeeding?

I'm around 7 weeks pg, and I'm still giving my 12 month old one bfeed per day (every night before he goes to bed). I have recently cut this down from 2 per day, and am planning to phase this last feed out soon, but just wondered if anyone had any experience of this too?

I'm concerned that by continuing this feed I'm somehow denying my new baby essential vits and nutrients. I'm on some super-duper supplements (Zita West), and have a good balanced diet. I actually feel fine (just a bit tired), but wonder if I stopped altogether would I suddenly start to feel amazing?!

Also, I suppose I'm reluctant to stop completely as I have really loved bfeeding my DS, and I'll miss it loads. I think he's pretty easy going, but will happily keep it up if it's still on offer!

Hope that makes sense . not even sure if I am posting in the right section! Any thoughts/experiences will be appreciated! xx

I wouldn't stop if I didn't want too.

i think there's a breastfeeding and preggers thread somewhere.

Lots support on here. I'm feeding dd twice a day, morn and night, we are ttc#6 and have no intentions of giving up, may even tandem feed yet, we'll see how it goes.

Do what you feel is right for you, not what you think is right if that makes sense.

Babies are selfish little creatures when they are inside us, (um and outside) and they take what they need from our bodies, hence they are fine, and thriving, we are chucking up 20 times a day, aneamic etc etc.

Good luck whatever you decide. x

I am. I haven't read it but there's a book called Tandem Breastfeeding which covers pregnancy and also feeding a baby and toddler at the same time.

Apparently it all sorts itself out. Sometimes the one you're feeding goes off the milk during the second trimester as it changes taste a bit. Sometimes also your supply lessens ( I think that's happening to me. I'm 12 weeks and my LO is feeding less at night - hurrah - and eating a lot more food.)

It's meant to be a great tool when dealing with any jealousy brought with new baby.

So, in short, you're fine to carry on if you want to, no reason to stop just cos your pregnant. Congratulations and good luck.

Brilliant! Thanks everyone - I feel lots better about it now. I think I was just feeling pressured to stop before we were ready but wasn't sure of the facts. Wow, aren't our bodies amazing!!?

I bf DS until I was 6 months pg & he was 17 months (so roughly the same age gap as you will have). He just lost interest - as others have said, your milk changes as your pregnancy progresses and they don't always like it.

If you're both happy to carry on then don't worry about it - the baby you're carrying gets first dibs on the nutrients. If anyone was to miss out it would be you. FWIW I would have happily continued to feed DS had he wanted to, but in the event I actually felt noticeably less tired when he stopped, and it was also quite nice to have a bit of a break between babies.

I bf DD until I was about 3m pregnant (she was just under 2yo); I hadn't planned to stop but was completely knackered and my supply dried up which made the process frustrating for both of us. It was only twice a day by then anyway, and she didn't seem to upset by stopping.

i ma, im 20 weeks pregnant, and dd is 8 month...but she is slowly goin off the milk..i feel so sad..but i guess its nature takin its course...

Sugarkane · 28/03/2009 09:45

Im currently 12 weeks pregnant and still breastfeeding my 10 month old. I really feel ready to stop and am hoping that like those above she will slowly self wean because at the min although she eats a very good and wide variety of solids she seems to be constantly feeding as well. Hopefully I can get a little break in feeding before the baby comes, keep your fingers crossed for me as I dont want to force her to stop feeding and would love it to be a natural progression.

thanks everyone, I'm so relieved to hear I'm not alone!

Good luck to mama2leah and sugarkane, I think the best advice is do what feels right - it's hard to remember that when you're swamped with other people's opinions on what you should and shouldn't do!

xx
