Weight gain in pregnancy - description query!!!

I am puzzled when people talk of how much weight they gain when pg.

If you said you put on 4 stone for example, does this mean what you are left weighing AFTER you have had the baby? Or the maximum weight you went to DURING the pregnancy?

eg I weighed 10st before pg, 14.5st at my heaviest during the pg, and 13st just after baby was born.

Would you say this means I put on 4.5st or 3st?
