28 week scan + irregular heartbeat detected

I've just returned from a 28 week scan where I've been told the baby has an irregular heartbeat. I'm due to go back next week for a more detailed heart scan. In the meantime, I am worried and was wondering if anybody else had a similar problem.

Haven't had a similar experience just wanted to offer some support. Must've been a shock to find that out. Hope everything turns out ok.

could it be a heart murmur? Was that mentioned?

I was born with a heart murmur and it cleared up, I'm fine now. Did the sonographer give you any idea what it might signify?

Sonographer didn't mention heart murmer. In fact I felt I had to drag information from her. Hopefully at the next scan I will be able to find out what could be the cause of this. I've had a little look on the internet to see what I can find out although it's a little bit technical for me to understand.

shame she didn't give you some idea. It must be very hard to wait for another scan. I would have thought you would have been seen by someone else if there was a serious problem. We had a soft marker picked up at my 20 weeks scan and had to wait to see the registrar so he could explain the implications.

I'm not entirely sure about irregular heartbeat. I think heart murmur is an extra beat, but it could be an irregular one. Hopefully someone with better knowledge will turn up soon.

wools - my dd has heart problems but they weren't picked up on scan (she's 11 now and things have moved on a bit!) - so I can't help with a personal experience. There is an info sheet on fetal heart scans on the Children's Heart Federation website which is pretty basic.

I hope you get the all-clear but if not there are lots of mums on the Heartline website message board who have had ante-natal diagnosis and will be able to offer some support.

We have a friend who had this happen, her ds was born with an irregular heartbeat, but it cleared up within a few months, is quite common apparently, so try not to worry too much, he's now a healthy 17mth old!

Thanks everyone for your messages of support and advice. I am trying not to worry excessively and the baby will be scanned again this week so I should be able to find out more from that. Since speaking to others over the last few days - it does seem that the problem is relatively common - and I hope that we have a happy outcome.

i heard the heart skip a beat and am having a cardiac scan tomorrow...so I know how you feel.

My consultant also told me i have excess fluid so i have a growth scan booked tomorrow too.

Trying not to worry but i just wanted to say i know how you feel!

Hiya wools and cehjames - i just wanted to say although it was 26 years ago my mum was told her baby (me!) also had a very irregular heartbeat and that i would almost certainly be very ill when i was born and would require surgery straight away, well i have to say im here and i have never had a problem with my heart once! - never had any surgery, never had any problems at birth, i just have an irregular heartbeat that is checked with an ECG every couple of years! i have 2 sons and a third baby on the way and so i have a very normal active life - i guess sometimes its just 'one of those things' i hope its the same for your babies girls, im sure it will be! - let us know how you get on!!xxx

Just wanted to say I have had 2 further scans since I last posted and irregular heartbeat has not been detected since. I don't want to think I'm out of the woods yet but am trying to remain calm and positive. Am due to give birth in approximately 3 weeks and am still v. nervous even though this is is my second child. Wishing you all the best and am thinking of you. Let me know how things go.
