Ok so i know that leg cramps are common in pregnancy but i was woken up last night by agonising cramp in a muscle at the top of my bum cheek! It was really painful when lying on either side or moving certain ways but at 35wks pregnant i can't sleep in any other position. It didn't go away until i had got up and walked around the bedroom - v annoying when trying to sleep. I've had this a few times before but only as twinges when i move an awkward way not as sustained pain. It's always at the same side as well. Anyone else or is it just me?!

I have this! (i think). It is a form of sciatica called piriformis syndrome and i have had it for FOUR MONTHS. I haven't slept through the night since I have had it, and only moving around helps it. I have tried everything and would recommend the following: hot water bottle, swimming (properly with dipping head or backstroke), physio and finally a chiropractor....

Good luck!

Oh oh oh, I had this, it was terrible!!!!!!!!! And I am a chiropractor so it was like a bad joke...

Quick relief with this stretch:

sit at edge of bed or on a chair, both feet planted on the floor, sitting squarely on both "sit bones" in your butt

if stretching the right side, put your right ankle on your left knee

let the right knee drop outward as far as possible

lean (curl) forward as far as bump will allow you

you'll feel the stretch in your bum/ hip (sometimes also in inner thigh)

if bump too big to lean forward, start in same position

sit up very straight, even arch your back a little

lean forward, leading with your chest (well, bump, really)

you'll feel this a bit more intensely than curling forward

do both sides a couple of times

Good luck!! If this doesn't make sense let me know and I will post a pic on my profile.

Thanks very much - i will try the stretches next time it happens. Had a few twinges again last night but not to the extent of the night before!

Very sympathetic to you Lottie - hopefully mine will just stay occasional and not constant like that.
