Anyone any experience of Antenatal Classes near Torbay and Delivery at Torbay Hospital?

Hi all,

I'm 28 weeks PG today with my first child and am waiting for my MW appointment to discuss possible antenatal classes.

I'm sure that the NHS don't run any around here and that we will end up paying for NCT ones.

Also, I'm interested in others experiences of Torbay Hospital in relation to maternity. I have heard that it's got a very good reputation, but unfortunately both my sisters had cesareans there and ended up with infections. I think the aftercare from HVs is fairly poor aswell in their experience.

Just wondered whether anyone can reassure me...

i've heard good things about torbay.
do you have other options? are you near exeter or plymouth.

ask for a tour. most maternity units do them.

Thanks Dragonbutter, I'm seeing my MW next week and I think she's going to give me all the details about the hospital tours then. Just not sure about the antenatal classes, I'll ask her - she should know I guess!!

I have been there a couple of times already for early scans (all fine now) and also because I need consultant care. They seem friendly and efficient, did you think the same? ... but your C section stories concern me as it is likely I will have one.

I wouldn't go to Derriford... I haven't heard anything good...

I had a leaflet from my midwife saying when the hospital tours are... something like every Thursday night I think (I need to look it up). Wine and cheese provided (I made that up)

I live in Torbay, had my first DD there 2 1/2 years ago, in my experience, I hate the place, I didnt like it there and wasnt treated very well, throughout whole pregnancy, but I may have just been a one off, theres always one huh!

The hospital tours are once a month, I think its the first or second Monday or Tuesday of the month, and are in the evening.

Im on my 2nd pregnancy and there aren't any antenatal classes, just two "parentcraft" sessions run at the hospital and they're a bit crap to be honest, I learnt more reading books than gong there, and that was for my first pregnancy!

Local NCT is in Totnes.

My HV's are Newton Abbot rather than Torbay and they are s**t! Don't know about Torbay ones though!

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and am having a homebirth because of what happened with first birth.

Any other questions, just ask!

i had mine both at derriford.
traumatic first time, but paediatrics were amazing.
very good consultants there.
planned c-section 2nd time and very nice.

sexybitch, I was 28 weeks on Wednesday, the day before you posted.

Chocolatebunnies, hmmm doesn't sound too hopeful. I'm also having issues with the place. This is my first baby, I had increased risk result from Nuchal Scan so had to have a CVS, which was done wrong so then had to have an Amnio aswell... Luckily all came back fine but they thought due to my blood result that I may have a small baby, so I've been having additional growth scans.

Then, on Thursday this week, I had to have a Glucose Tolerance Test because my Mum had late-onset Type 2 diabetes. Mine has come back positive so now I'm going to have to have insulin injections. I'm really annoyed because I've never ever been overweight in my life and never really have sweet things other than fruit!! Nothing has been picked up in my urine tests either (by Newton Abbot MWs), so I'm starting to think that there's something a bit dodgey going on...

Heylottie, I wondered where you'd gone hun!! How far along are you now? I can't believe that I've only got 12 weeks to go!! Luckily everything is ready, but this GD thing has really thrown a spanner in the works, you're supposed to eat what you want in bloody PG!!

Dragonbutter, I think Derriford would be too far for me. My little girl is currently breech and they're encouraging me to try and turn her, but I think I might be better off with a cesarean as I've heard bad stories about the MWs at Torbay leaving you for hours on your own (with your DH/DP) and being really unhelpful. It's a minefield isn't it?!!

I had DS at Torbay back in October last year and have nothing but positive things to say about them TBH. I certainly wasn't left alone for hours on end.
In the end DS was got stuck so ended in an emergency section and it was well managed, neatly stitched and certainly had no signs of infection.

Also, I don't know where in Torbay you are but we certainly had NHS antenatal classes on offer.

If you want any more info, just let me know but I certainly wouldn't worry about the hospital.

Hi Diedandgonetodevon, it's good to hear a positive story. They are supposed to have a great reputation, but it's good to actually hear about a good firsthand experience.

Any advice on the antenatal classes would be good?!

I was severely hospital phobic before hand so I was surprised that I actually had quite a good time while I was there! My birthplan was to be discharged immediately to avoid a hospital stay but obviously DS had other ideas so we were in for 4 nights in the end and I really can't fault the care i had.

The NHS classes were just booked through my midwife pretty early in pregnancy so you're probably best asking yours. They were 6 hours over three Wednesday evenings.

The hospital also do pretty good tours one Monday a month so you can check out the facilities and make sure you feel comfortable there.

I was due to see my MW this week but had to cancel because I have to go to the Gestational Diabetes Clinic now instead, so I'll have to rearrange for next Friday at a different surgery...

I will definitely ask about the Antenatal Classes though and we definitely want to do the tour!!
