Stomach cramps early pregnancy

I have had stomach cramps since last night, during the night. It started with a sort of sharp stabbing pain like a pulled muscle in one side, then since then I have had cramps on and off all night.

Still have it this morning but no bleeding. Is this normal? I had a couple of bleeds and cramping in last pg at about 6-7 weeks, but am a bit worried this time.

Went I had cramps and bleed, Dr told me to stay in bed and rest for a couple of days (well first Dr told me I was miscarrying when I wasn't but thats another story).

Should I rest? Or just get on with my day as normal?

if you are going to have a miscarriage, then nothing will stop if it is inevitable. but lots of women do feel that resting is helpful at least from a psycholgical point of view.

pain in one side is not a good thing..esp if you have shoulder tip pain too.. so keep an eye on it , as it were

some stomach pains and cramps are usual. massive hormonal changes are going on, things are stretching and changing

if it continues you could ask for a referral yo EPAU, but at 5 weeks, would be hard to see anything execpt that the pregnancy is in the right place

fingers crossed for you x

Hello Pavlov,
I've been pregnant 4 times, 2mc's 1 2yo dd and I'm 17weeks pregnant now.
I've had bleeding and cramps at 5-6 weeks with all of them. I think it's called the settling in period where the egg attaches to the lining of the womb. This is apparently a sensitive time and sometimes the egg doesn't attach and just comes straight out. My doctor called this a chemical pregnancy.
Sorry, I know thats neither good or bad news but it is normal. If you start to bleed at all you should call the early pregnancy unit at your hospital. They might give you an early scan to rule out ectopic if your in allot of pain.
I've got my fingers crossed for you.

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 07:38

Lulu - thank you, the initial sharp pain was on one side, but the cramping is general cramping, I guess sort of period like, and no more pain on one side.
Last time I did not find out I was pg until 6 weeks, this time I knew at just before 4 weeks, too early to know, much longer to fret about it being ok!

I shall continue as normal for now, got a busy day, and if it gets worse/is accompanied by any other symptoms I will come home from work. Thank you.

Thank you confuzzled, that is very helpful. The last time, the Dr said I was miscarrying as I bled, but I did not beleive him and called the EPU who were cobsmacked he had not referred me, I went straight up and went on to have DD who is currently eating scrambled egg (needless to say I changed Drs immediately!) It was just a while ago and I seem to have forgotten everything .

Oh and congratulations to you too Confuzzeled!

I just feel nervous. I have had some awful awful dreams, not so much about this, but about aspects of my life that seem to have something horrendous happen that I have no control over and then I wake up panicking about losing this baby. I don't recall feeling this anxious last time, we were very calm about it, I think I sort of knew last time it would all be ok, if that makes sense. But I don't feel that now and it worries me.

Come on then ladies, kick me up the backside and tell me to stop moping and get dressed for work.

Pain towards one side is very often a corpus luteum cyst (which forms out of the empty follicle and sustains the pregancy until the placenta takes over).

Cramps are also normal in early pregnancy - I had them every time, but ironically not with either of my ectopics (with those it was just backache - also no one-sided pain).

IME cramps are fine as long as they are not accompanied by bleeding. If they are, or if they are excruciating, then it is of course a good idea to get checked out.

You may find that they ease off over the next few days, in which case you can stop fretting and enjoy your pregnancy.
Congratulations, by the way.

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 07:57

MrsHappy - thank you. The cyst, that is ok then, if that is what it might be? Nothing to worry about?

OP posts:
MrsHappy · 16/03/2009 08:08

If it is a cyst, it is definitely nothing to worry about. They get really quite big! I had a scan at 4+4. My left ovary was 20mm x 13mm (normal) and the cyst on my right ovary was 25mm x 20mm x 13 mm. It's not surprising I had some twinges!

Just see how you go over the next few days. I think if I had pain which was more than a 7 out of ten, if I was bleeding as well, if I had shoulder tip pain or was very light headed, or if it didn't ease off at all over the next week or so I would get checked. But otherwise try not to fret.

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 08:11

Thank you, I feel a bit calmer now. [sighs], now all this stressing has made me sit and do nowt. I am meant to be in work by now! I shall now get off mn and searching the web (a bad idea eh?) and get DD and myself ready for work and nursery.

I am so worried, early pregnancy about 7 weeks and started getting period like discharge....any hope or is it the enevitable. Cant go to A&E till after work so probably going to spend the whole day worried.

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 09:12

Would you be able to take time off work this morning, go into work after? Or call the EPU for some advice? Fingers crossed it is as these lovely ladies say for me, normal and everything with be fine.

OP posts:
mamakirst · 16/03/2009 09:28

Thanks, I called my GP who said to call the NHS helpline who said to call my GP!! So I said they were all useless and I would make the trip to A&E this afternoon. thanks for your support Pavlov. Fingers crossed.
PS are you making the trip to the EPU?

pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 09:34

Mama - I am going to wait and see what happens over the next couple of days I think. Like Lulu said, its so early for me they wont be able to tell much, and if it is not good news I can't do much right now. I am feeling more sore than achey, and my back hurts a bit and I have a stinking headache. I have decided to do a bunk from work afterall and crawl into bed and feel sorry for myself. I know I should not, as I might need time of later in the pg but I just feel a bit icky/grumpy/sore.

OP posts:
pavlovthecat · 16/03/2009 09:35

Oh and good luck youtself btw, Drs/NHS can be so useless can't they! I hope it all works out well, let us know how you get on.

How are you now Pav?

I actually had a small bleed today, I panicked a bit at first but soon calmed down when I realised how small the bleed was and the fact I wasn't getting any pain.

How old is your dd? Just wondered as mine is nearly 2. I think it's a nice gap in ages.

PussinJimmyChoos · 17/03/2009 21:20

Pav - you ok? Text me if you want.

Fwiw, when I was pg with DS, I had period type cramps up until about 10weeks...no spotting at all, just that 'af is about to come' feeling...I think its quite normal for some women

minxofmancunia · 17/03/2009 21:28

Hi oavlov, had stretching and cramping pain at 5 weeks that kept me awake at night! V worried and anxious as had mc in sept (am 14 weeks now already have dd 2.6 can't remember it happening with her)

Several visits to epu and e few private scans later all looks fine

Think it's fairly common something to do with the egg burrowning in.

MrsHappy · 18/03/2009 14:17

How are you going now, Pavlov?
