Negative Tests but LOTS of Pregnancy Symptoms - Phantom Pregnancy?

Hi Everyone

I?m new to this but I was looking for some much needed advice as I am so confused. It?s a bit of a long story so I?ll try to be concise.

I?ve had irregular periods since September 08, been checked out by doc who advised low oestrogen level. I have had one period since then (Jan 09) and nothing since. She thought the low oestrogen level might be due to losing a fair amount of weight but my BMI is still 21.5 I?m not underweight at all.

In the last couple of weeks I have had LOTS of pregnancy symptoms (i.e. nausea, extreme tiredness, emotionalness and irritability, bloated abdomen, increased sense of smell and gag reflex, hungry all the time, slightly sore and sensitive nipples, slight abdominal pain and weight gain and increased frequency of urination). These all prompted me to go back to the doctors who said she wouldn?t be surprised if I was pregnant so I did 2 home tests (different days) and a doctors lab test all of which came back negative.

She suggested that if the test was negative then the symptoms would probably settle down but it is over a week now and they haven?t.

The only other thing I can think of is that it is a phantom pregnancy but I thought you only got those if you were either desperate to be pregnant or not be, and I am neither. My partner and I are not actively trying for a family at the moment but are not using any contraception and just taking it as it comes. I would be delighted if I was pregnant but if I?m not at this stage then that?s fine.

What are my next steps with continuing symptoms? Does anyone have any similar experiences or advice?

Could it be that I am testing too soon as not having regular periods makes it hard to know when to test? We are not massively sexually active and the most recent times were about 4 and 2 weeks ago, sorry if that is too much information!!

Thanks in advance

LKB

Please anyone, any advice?

I know you can't tell me if I am pregnant or not pregnant phantomnly or otherwise or anything else but I would appreciate any advice or experiences you might have.

Most of all I would like someone to talk to about all this as feel like I will burst if I keep keeping this all in.

Please help.

L, x.

I actually had this the month before I fell pregnant.. missed period, some pregnancy symptoms (though not as many as you).

I went to the doctors who sent off a blood test for me, as I had done two home tests and they had come back negative. They called me up 2 days later to let me know the result.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

have you looked up a corpus luteum cyst? i think that can sometimes explain some of these symtoms.

Lulumama · 13/03/2009 14:38

i had similar experience to sheeta. went off tea and coffee too adn was amazed when i was not pregnant. the next month i was though !

i would go back to your docs to discuss the irregular periods/low oestrogen level, especially if you are wanting to have children in teh future.. you might need a referral eventually.

if you have had 3 negative tests and it is 2 weeks since your last intercourse, it could well be your negative result is accurate.

LauraKB · 13/03/2009 14:41

Thanks for your reply Sheeta - much appreciated. I take it the blood result was positive? Congratulations btw

I am trying to make sure I am not imagining symptoms but I'm not sure if I'm talking myself into thinking I am pregnant because there would appear to only be one logical conclusion to the symptoms, and because I have some I think I'm having others! Am not imagining emtionalness though, went mad one night recently and was in floods of tears for about half an hour because the other half hadn't put the potatoes on!

One thing I am clinging on to is the fact that I don't have sore breasts in the way most people describe but as per another thread this doesn't always happen!!

Have never heard of corpus luteum cyst. Will look this up now, thank you.

"if you have had 3 negative tests and it is 2 weeks since your last intercourse, it could well be your negative result is accurate."

That would be fine I would just quite like the symptoms to go away and to return to normal if that's the case!!

Re referral, I am going to go back to the docs and ask for this in the next couple of weeks as we would like to have a baby at somepoint in the future, and if there is a problem I would like to get it looked into sooner rather than later, am 27 at the moment.

LauraKB, no the test was negative that month, and then the next month I fell pregnant.

Lulumama, that's interesting, how odd :-) I was absolutely convinced that I was pregnant, but wasn't, and then had a positive test 4 weeks later.

LauraKB · 13/03/2009 15:15

So the upshot is maybe I should go home and demand to start 'trying' at once , lol.

you will most likely not get a referral re fertility treatment until you have been trying for 12 months or so. but if you are already having signs of odd hormone levels, then your doc should be trying to help you get sorted .

LauraKB · 13/03/2009 16:43

Yeah, I think that's what the doctor meant when she was talking about a referral to a gynaecologist - getting my periods etc sorted out so we knew where we were with trying I think, rather than fertility treatment as such.
