Low thyroid in pregnancy - anyone else experienced this?

I had low thyroid levels in my last pregnancy, picked up and treated with thyroxine quite late in the pregnancy. I was reassured last time that as it manifested late in pregnancy (around 30 weeks) and the levels were only very slightly below normal that there weren't likely to be any implications for the baby, and sure enough I now have a very healthy DD. I have been tested this time around - currently 10 weeks pg - and the midwife thinks the levels are a bit low again.

Has anyone else had low thyroid (underactive I assume) that seems to relate only to pregnancy? If so, what are the implications? If you google underactive thyroid in pregnancy it throws up all sorts of scary articles, how serious is this really?

I am waiting to see my GP about this so just wanted a better understanding to stop me worrying.

Thanks.

Your TSH should be kept below 2 in pg

Do you know what your actual test results are?

No not yet, I am waiting for my GP to call to discuss it with me, it was just the midwife who said over the phone on Saturday that one of my thyroid levels looked low but as she was on shift at the labour ward she didn't have time to go into details, just told me not to worry and to call my GP today to talk it through.

I think I am just worrying because I don't know what the problem is yet - I need to get the facts first!

here is a recentish thread on the topic

Best plan is see GP, find out results, if it's between 2 and 5 ask for treatment
If GP not happy to treat you then demand an urgent referral to an endocrinologist

Good luck

Thanks Eldon, that thread is useful. Will await full results from GP, he should be calling back any minute now.
