is it just me or does anyone else have trouble trying to wee into the sample bottle when you are 40 weeks pregnant because you cant actually see over your bump to know where the bottle is??!! Lovely!

creamcake - i am overdue and all I have been dreaming about lately is the worry of pooing/weeing whilst pushing, i would be mortified, but apparently its really common, and like someone else said i dont think they even tell you that you have done so you'll never know!!

littlemel · 10/09/2004 16:41

and why do they always give you your sample back after they have tested it? what are you meant to do with it til you get home? take it to the office in your handbag and hope you don't pull it out later instead of your mobile phone infromt of all your colleaugues?!!(obviously i havent done this myself!)

coddychops · 10/09/2004 16:43

In salisbury they as you your foot size!!
tols them I had two sons in b ham wihtout any one enmquiring of this!

Slinky · 10/09/2004 16:49

Coddy

My GP enquired of my shoe size when I was first pregnant with DD1.

When I proudly announced that I took a size 7, he bellowed "fabulous, fabulous, what wonderful child-bearing hips you have, no problems there then".

However, DD1 ended up being pulled out with forceps after getting stuck - AND said GP actually had the privilege of performing the delivery - as I pointed out at the time, so much for having b*dy size 7 feet/child-bearing hips

Flossam · 10/09/2004 18:49

Little Mel, Its so you can give them the same sample back next time to test again!

Lonelymum · 10/09/2004 19:47

I think it is so they save on sample bottles - they want you to use the same one again. When I was pg sample bottles seemed to be like gold dust and I found it really embarrassing using a peanut butter jar (or whatever)from home so I was one of those irritating people who didn't turn up with a sample and had to provide one on the spot.

gingernut · 10/09/2004 20:41

Hey Sam, hadn't thought of doing that. Might try it as it's getting to the point already where it's difficult to see what I'm doing down there , and they've given me a teeny narrow little jar to aim into .

I asked them why they gave me the wee back (they never used to the first time) and they said they'd been told they weren't allowed to pour it down the sink any more.....bizarre, I though we was supposed to be sterile?

Flossam · 10/09/2004 20:45

My findings of NHS buildings is they tend to be prone to leaks... I suspect that the secretaries in the office underneath the consulting room are very grateful that the water dripping from their ceiling is no longer yellow!!

Also, is probably the same sink they wash their hands in, and you might be infected!

gingernut · 10/09/2004 20:54

Well, it's a single storey buidling so no-one downstairs to upset.

And they could chase it down with some antiseptic or something couldn't they?

I can cope with disposing of it myself, it's just that they always seem to spill some and give it back to me tacky (put this back in your handbag, Mrs gingernut), and they always used to just pour it down the sink that's all!

highlander · 10/09/2004 20:56

the fact that you are conned into thinking you have choices during pregnancy and childbirth - ha!

sweetkitty · 11/09/2004 18:49

asking DP if I had pooed in labour he said "with everything else that was flying out you hardly noticed it and the midwife cleaned it straight away"

please anyone who is worried about it don't be I was worried and when it came to it I honestly did not care!

coddychops · 11/09/2004 18:50

i pooed third time

MummyToSteven · 11/09/2004 18:52

can't believe i am admitting this stone cold sober but - I pooed erm several times during labour . which disconcerted me - as I just assumed it would be a once and that would clear me out type occurence. it got discreetly cleared up - but silly me did keep on asking whether I had or not.

creamcake · 14/09/2004 15:11

No way! There is absolutely no way I am pooing myself whilst in labour!! Are you allowed to take laxatives? Are they safe to take when pregnant? Otherwise I won't be able to relax at all and all I will be thinking about during labour is pooing or not pooing I should say!!

prettycandles · 14/09/2004 15:27

creamcake, once you're in labour you won't give a damn whether or not you poo!

Actually, I knew someone who pooed just after the Pethidine had kicked in, she saw the midwife taking the t**d away and was so stoned that she thought it was the baby! As she repeated to me "I didn't expect it to be so small and brown, and was quite disappointed."

nikcola · 14/09/2004 15:36

i pooed when i gave birth and i didnt care

motherinferior · 14/09/2004 15:39

I was so bombed on gas and air I thought dd2 WAS a giant poo.

Quite frankly - and I speak as a former poo-phobic - the poo experience does not end with the birth. Poo figures revoltingly large in one's life for the next few years.

alicatsg · 14/09/2004 15:53

fab thread - for me the memory of the 34 weeks of nausea (had 3 weeks nausea free around 18 weeks) puts me off - someone sneezed at the other end of the bus one morning and I threw up instantly, messily and in quantity because it made me feel so queasy. Still meant I got lots of space on the 521 thereafter.

also toothpaste - still makes me gag! shudder

I think the the fact that people say they were in so much pain/so out of it that they didn't care that they were pooing in public even more frightening than the fact that they pooed. Honestly, I do.

prufrock · 14/09/2004 16:29

Me too aloha. Thank god for elective sections hey?

aloha · 14/09/2004 16:46

I know it sounds dreadful to some people, but yes!

Distracted · 14/09/2004 17:00

creamcake - think you can take laxatives if you're really worried. Have to say this was a phobia of mine first time and I asked if I could take anything, by time I asked, was too late for oral laxative so was offered a pessary. Midwives thought I was really odd to ask for one . Everyone (as they have on this thread) does say it's not a big deal when it happens though, and having gone through labour once now I can imagine so - don't think I'll be so worried this time (expecting number 2 in next few weeks)!
