This is a bit of a strange one but here I go anyway. I'm six weeks pg today but for the last week, at certain times of the day I've felt as if my heart is racing and it feels as if it's thumping really hard against my chest. Just wondered if this was a pg symptom and if anyone else had experienced similair?

YES!

MW says it's because the progesterone makes all your blood vessels 'saggy' so you feel palpitations.

It could also be a sign of anaemia, so you might want to talk to MW or GP about it and perhaps request an early blood test to check your Iron levels.

Hiya,

it sounds like you're getting palpitations which are apparently common in pregnancy. I would definitely go to your GP/midwife though just to let them know and they might recommend that you have an ECG just to check all is normal.

I had the same thing at about 19 wks and had a series of checks as my family history isn't great and I've had previous abnormal ECG's.

The things to look out for in particular are shortness of breath and dizziness which should be checked immediately.

Do you find it happens when you're particularly stressed or drinking cafeine as these can set them off.

Definitely speak with your midwife anyway just to get them checked out.

I pulse was 100 a lot of the time in my last pregnancy. It did my head in, i could feel it in my ears at night and every time i had a check up, which was 3 times a week because it was a nightare pregnancy, i;d have to have a discussion about the mw about it.

Mine was caused by Anemia nit i think it can be normal in pregnancy anyway.

When i had my section my Hr was 140, Ds's was 150 though i think that was fear more than anything

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and my heart rate seems to jump between 95 and 110. I can also feel my pulse in my stomach, my fingers, my neck, etc. I guess it can be common in pregnancy, but I just have a feeling it may be something more. I asked the OB nurse a few weeks ago and she said if it continued to see my General practitioner - but if it's a pregnancy complication shouldn't the OB be looking into it? I see my OB on Wednesday and will ask more about that then, but does anyone have any ideas? Also, I crave cereal a lot which is high in Iron, maybe anemia?

Hi Littlehouse,

If you go to your GP, they can do an ECG at the surgery if they think you need it and you can get a copy of it which you can take to your OB.

I found that once I'd had a few tests done, I was much calmer about the palpitations and they in turn have calmed down loads. I think people can definitely make them worse by stressing about them when they happen - I know I definitely did!

Get yourself down to to your GP and you'll be able to put your mind at rest.
