Hyperemesis Gravidarum - What drugs worked for you?

I'm 41 and my husband and myself are going to have a last attempt at pregnancy before I become an old age pensioner. We've had 3 kids already but I suffered terribly with HG with all of them and wasn't even taken in to hospital to be re-hydrated. It was so bad in pregnancy number 4 that I had a termination as the illness was so unbearable. Since then I've moved to a new area where they actually take HG seriously and my doctor has offered me all the help I need - drugs, short hospital stays for re-hydration, home visits for a quick jab if I can't make it into the surgery...basically everything my last LHA refused to do (try dry crackers or ginger biscuits ).

First thing she is going to prescribe (even before I get pregnant, just so I have it ready) is Stemetil but every thing I have read on the net and on forums are about 95% of HG sufferers saying it didn't work. If it doesn't work she will try me on a different drug (I can't remember it's name but over 80% of HG sufferers find it ineffective too) and as a last resort I can Zofran (which works in over 95% of women with HG).

What I'm asking is if any of you other sufferers have had any success or failures on any or all of the drugs (even ones I haven't mentioned) I would love to hear about it. I have a week to decide whether this is going to work as without the drugs I'm not even going to attempt the pregnancy. My husband, my kids and myself do not deserve the misery of another 9 months of endless vomiting and illness

Poor you - I think you're very brave to try again. I didn't have HG, but did suffer with 24hr nausea and vomiting 10 - 12 times a day for about the first 4 -41/2 months with pg1. When it began again with pg2 I demanded drugs! The GP gave me something that goes by many names (phenigan was one of them) which is among other things an antihistimin. It is also used for travel sickness. I have to say I was like a zombie whilst taking them, but I was only sick a couple of times, and the constant nausea disappeared. I'm so pleased that you have found such a supportive GP - best of luck.

prednisolone (steroid) was the only thing that helped me; anti-emetics had no effect at all (wasn't offered zofran though - as it is so expensive).

i was given alsorts when i had hg - even drugs that are given to patients having chemotherapy.

i was given stemetil, cyclozine and metroclopomide (not sure how to spell it). the only thing that worked for me was taking vitamin d - think it was 50mg a day.

i was hospitalised 5 times over 4 months and each time needed 18 - 24 litres of fluid. i was prescribed vit d - thiamin but each time the course finished i was terrible with sickness again. i carried on with them and was fine from 32 weeks.

i do really feel for you - my dd is now 3 but i can remember everything, even the drugs i had.

i have told other women to take vit d and it worked for all of those too.

good luck and i hope you are ok

hope this helps xx

I ended up taking metocloprimide after onths of trying different tablets, but nothing really worked, was hydrated twice and should have been a third time. I had HG from conception til birth. all pregnancys are different so you never know, you could miss out on sickness altogether with another one.
