Can braxton hicks be quite painful as well as just uncomfortable?

This is my second pg and the BH started earlier than they did when I was pg with DD. They have just been slightly uncomfortable. Today though for the last couple of hours I have been having regular BH and they are really quite painful, like actual period cramps, with back pain as well.
I am having to stop what I am doing and get my breathing in check to get through them.

How many weeks are you?

insertwittynicknameHERE · 04/03/2009 19:55

20+5

I would get it checked out.

I don't want to worry you, but it sounds like it could be the start of labour, which you are obviously not ready for.

Can you go to hostpital to be monitored?

insertwittynicknameHERE · 04/03/2009 20:01

Really I was hoping that the BH could just be painful.

I have done a lot today. I only went for my 20 week scan yesterday (well 20+4 for me) and everything looked fine then.

are they getting worse or close together?
do they stop if you go for a walk?

jkb · 04/03/2009 20:07

its maybe doing alot that could have brought them on??
Im sure its nothing to worry about, however, I dont think braxton hicks are regular hunny?? or that painfull to stop u doing what u r doing..
the only thing to do is to call delivery suite... they will put you on a CTG machine & will know straight away is proper contractions.. if they are then they may be able to stop them with drugs etc.... dont leave it though..cos this would have to be done asap..
far better to be safe than sorry... ring then straight away xx let me know what they say... try not to worry though, as chanced are they will see all is fine xx

insertwittynicknameHERE · 04/03/2009 20:07

Not getting any worse, and come on regular but in irregular patterns, I know that doesn't make sense but the are more regular than the BH I have been having IYSWIM.

I have taken 2 paracetamol and DH is home now to see to DD. DD has been quite poorly all day with D&V so I've been running to and fro cleaning up sick and poo.

I can still feel her moving (we found out yesterday that we are having another girl). They are still happening, I am going to call the ward.

Thanks.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 04/03/2009 20:28

I can't get though to the ward, I think I'll just have to lay down for a bit.

Thanks for the advice.

Just seen your thread. I have never known BH to be painful, not to say that they can't be in some women - esp if you've been overdoing it today. Fingers crossed.

LynetteScavo · 04/03/2009 21:22

Wishing you well. Hope everything is OK.

I had the same at around 20 weeks my BHs are painful still pregnant (just for other reasons) at 37 weeks. I find taking a couple of paracetomal and going to bed stopped them.

jkb · 05/03/2009 10:07

Any news hunny?? Did they monitor you? I do hope you are ok? xx

insertwittynicknameHERE · 05/03/2009 13:39

Update:
They kept me in overnight just for observation, they don't think it was early labor, or at least there are no other signs that it could be. My cervix is completely closed and by the time I got to the hopsital the BH had died down, I still had bad backache and my tummy was very sore and tender (still is TBH).

I have a urinary tract infection, a possible bowel infection and I have a vrial infection anyway from about a week or so ago, they have put me on AB's and given me a pessary as the AB's can apparently cause thrush. I have only ever had thrush while pg so no doubt I will end up having to use the pessary. My consultant came to see me (I have consultant led care due to having a congenital heart defect) and checked me over. He was happy for me to come home (well at my mums anyway as Dh is working really late tonight) but told me to take it easy. He said that the urinary tract infection could apparently go to my kidneys and then I would require more intervention.

I do feel better (had a great nights sleep), my tummy is sore and I have a dull backache but no more BH and no cramping anymore They said if I have any more problems or there is anything I am worried about just to give them a call, but they would rather not see me on the ward again until I am ready to give birth lol

Thank you everyone for all of the advice and support you gave me last night, I would have probably just ignored it and then it would have gotten worse.

Glad all is OK. Can I suggest you get somebody to pick you up some Lactobacillus Acidophillus? If you don't know it's a kind of 'friendly bacteria'. You can get it from Holland and Barrett or other health food shops. It will really help with the effects of the antibiotics and the bowel infection so you may not need to use the pessary. Very good for supporting a healthy immune system too and as it sounds like you are a bit run down they would help with this. They are completely safe to take during pregnancy. Don't take it in the form of those yoghurty drinks as they have too much sugar in them.

You can also break the capsules open and sprinkle some in you dd's milk/cereal etc, will help with the after effects of her tummy bug.

insertwittynicknameHERE · 05/03/2009 13:58

Thanks hedgewitch, I do drink cranberry juice cos I just loooove the stuff, but I suppose I should get the propper stuff and not the added sugar varitey. I have never been able to find some without added sugar, can you point me in the right direction please.

ladymac, I have written that down as I cant even say it lol and will send my mum out to get some for me.
Thank you.
