2 BFP home tests, AF 2 weeks late & Doc says I'm not pregnant...

Well the title says it all really.

We have been ttc and when my AF was late I did a test (Clear blue) and it was faint but still positive.

I had bought a 2 pack of tests so just for double confirmation I did another test the following morning which was also positive and faint.

So anyway fast forward to today - I had a doctors appt. She did a test but it was negative so she ordered blood tests which I should have to results of tomorrow. I will be 6wk preg if pregnant.

Does anyone know what might be happening? I am just hoping that her test was dodgy! I'm 35yo, fit, healthy, have DD4yo and DS14mo BTW.

Which clearblue tests did you use? Was it the +/- ones?

Could you do another home test today to see if the GP's result was a one off?

Yes I think so. It wasn't an electronic one if that the other option. And I used 2.

I am overseas and it is night time now. Would have to go out in the morning to get some more tests and the doctor is calling me tomorrow anyway. May as well save my $$ and wait.

I usually say a positive is a positive but having read up on it, those +/- ones are often reported as misleading/showing possible false positives. See here for more information.

I can think of three possible scenarios:

You're pg and the gp's test was dodgy

You aren't pg and your tests were dodgy

The third possibility is more complicated and would be explored by the blood tests.

Have you any pain or discharge at all?

No I have no pain or discharge.

If anything I feel pregnant, sore boobs, very windy, knackered, craving Thai food. Maybe this is all psychosomatic and I am imagining it...

But where is my normally very regular AF?

I guess I will just have to wait for that phone call... darn!!

That sounds like just what happened to me - and I'm now 16 weeks pregnant!! My locum GP was either crap or the NHS test was... anyway good luck on your bloods!

some pg tests work by detecting a hormone level of 25, some higher, say 50 for example. if your level is around the 25 mark (early pg), you might get a faint + with one test, but test - on another. only true way of telling is with a blood test as being 2 weeks late, in theory, you should be testing well + by now.

when a preg test says 99% accurate it means that Positive results are 99% accurate i.e very unlikely to get a false positive but it is possible to get false negatives due to testing too soon or human error.
I would say that 2 tests saying yes would indicate pregnancy as the GP will have used tests with the same accuracy as yours.

Same thing happened to me on my 1st i didnt get a positive result from the doc til i was 4months gone already he kept saying i just had a water infection only i knew different so eventually took myself off to another doctor and was booked in to have a scan straight away which told me what i already knew that i was 4 months gone but i did have low hormone levels

Hi Iamconfused - I don't want to scare you but I MC at 6 wks - I got BFP at 1 week overdue, went to see doc, then the following week I just stopped feeling pregnant (if that makes sense) did a test and BFN. Next day started spotting - but no heavy bleed, no pain. few days later had early scan which showed complete MC.

So - my theory is that you could have been preg, but possibly had very early MC.

Can you ask your doc for an early scan anyway?

i had this at the doctors. their tests measure a level of 50 (typically on NHS) home tests measure much lower.
i have been NOT pregnant 6 times now.. according to my GP surgery!

And just to reassure you, I also felt definitely pregnant but when GP said it was a big fat negative I felt like I'd made it all up or must have lost the baby - and was pretty upset - but then did another test the next day and it proved him wrong. He tested me last thing in the afternoon and I'd had a big glass of water to make sure I could pee and it diluted the hormones right down. I tested again right in the morning and bingo. I think NHS tests are not as accurate as the more expensive ones you can buy yourself.

My doctor has just called and it is good news!! Yay I am still pregnant, just as I thought I was.

She said that it may be that I am still pretty early and the test she did didn't pick it up or some such bollocks!

I am soooo relieved. I spent the night tossing and turning wondering WTF was going on. By about 2am I reached the conclussion I'd had another MC and was waiting for it all to end.

Anyway I can now look forward to rapid weight gain, sickness, nausea, discomfort, tiredness and all that other good pregnancy stuff!! Bring it on!

(NHS tests are much less sensitive than home tests, because they buy a generic cheaper option in bulk, and the commercial ones need to compete with each other. Your GP needs to stop scaring people!)

I'm not sure it is the NHS - didn't iamconfused say she was overseas? And for that matter, don't GPs generally take your word for it, because the home tests are as good as their own?
