I still don't look pregnant should I worry?

Hi,

A very good friend of mine who I haven't seen for 6 weeks as she has been working away saw me on Saturday and I am now 19 weeks pregnant - she said she was shocked because I do not look pregnant. I know what she means, I am a 'ahem' larger lady but I carry my weight on my boobs, legs and bum - in fact my waist is normally a size and a 1/2 smaller than the rest of me.

The problem is I am still fitting into all of my clothes with room to spare - I am really worried that the baby isn't growing.

The only explanation I really have is that my mum had 3 very tiny babies - biggest 5lb 2oz and most of my family have had small children but even still it is 30 years on now and babies as I keep reading are getting bigger.

Anyway after the waffle has anybody else experienced this?

I think pregnant women come in all shapes and sizes. I was freakishly ENORMOUS and my tummy still hasn't recovered. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones and will bounce back to normal staright away. Wouldn't think you had anything to worry about RE the baby.

P.s. my baby was tiny!

fruitshootsandheaves · 22/02/2009 16:20

I didnt show at all till I was about 6 months. Babies were small to average size.

heartmoonshadow · 22/02/2009 16:25

Thanks ladies, I just need some reassurance as I only have friends with 6/7 year olds and family with much older so no-one with recent experience or memories to talk to!

I'm 19+4 today. I've just had this conversation with my sister. She was shocked that I don't look pregnant at all. I'm not the slightest of women either, but not huge! Can definitely feel the bump though now, and the kicks have been coming on stronger these past few days so I know everything is fine in terms of growth.

Don't worry Everything will be fine, not everyone shows before 5-6 months unless it's not their first baby.

juneybean · 22/02/2009 16:30

A couple of girls I know who were...larger... actually lost weight when pregnant, so it could be you're losing your weight and the babies growing so you aren't seeing any difference.

I am sure you're fine :D

ComeWhineWithMe · 22/02/2009 16:37

I didn't start showing until 6 months .

bronze · 22/02/2009 16:40

I managed to have my last baby without people realising I was pregnant. So at 27 weeks I know I didn't look pregnant. I was the same with the two before as well. We think its because I'm tall so they tuck themselves into my body more. Reassure yourself you're perfectly normal

Littlefish · 22/02/2009 17:27

I am larger too. When I was pregnant with dd I didn't start to show until my bump stuck out further than my boobs!

It sounds like we are similar shapes (small waist) and I didn't really show until I was about 7 and a half months!

When I was on maternity leave, 4 weeks before dd was born, I went to visit my old school, and people asked me why I was off work - they had no idea I was pregnant until I stood up!

cece · 22/02/2009 17:36

I bought some babygrows once and the lady in the shop asked who was having the baby. I was and I was 41 weeks! LOL.

That was my first though... The second one my bump was so enormous by 41 weeks people has to step out of my way!

I am pg wiht third now and people are only just starting to notice.. I am 28 weeks!

babyc · 22/02/2009 17:36

Hi, I was a curvy size 6-8 before, and was in my normal jeans until about 22 weeks, when I suddenly went huge. Was having regular scans and baby was measuring about 3 weeks big at 18 weeks, got so fed up of consultants saying 'you're tiny, lets just check the baby..' only to then say 'ooh, its not small' or words to that effect. I think because my boobs got so big they overshadowed my tummy! I'm still not huge, just moved into size 10 or 12s normal clothes really, but baby is still big for his dates. I still have bump envy at times!

MollieO · 22/02/2009 17:47

I told my employer that I was pregnant when I was 25 weeks (latest you can leave it). They were really shocked! Had ds at 7 months and went from size 12 to size 14 so even before I had him I didn't look very pregnant (never got offered a seat on the train/tube). Ds was supposed to be 10lbs but arrived 7 weeks early at 5lbs 3oz. I used to be envious of those football shaped bumps - obviously pregnant, which I never was.

neolara · 22/02/2009 18:43

Is it your first? With my first no-one noticed until 23 weeks. I was huge at the end. With my second, I showed much earlier - around 15 weeks.

babynumber7 · 22/02/2009 19:09

As my nn would suggest I'm pg with DC7. I have NEVER EVER looked noticably pg, even when going into hospital to have each child, never got past a size 10 who looks like they've just come from an eat as much as you want buffet , always have a 34-36 week pregnancy with a resulting sub 5pounder. DCs have all been perfectly healthy, just teeny tiny. On the plus side I literally left hospital in my size 6 jeans 8 hours after baby number 6 was born last year!

Sometimes I do wish I looked more pg though!

SheWillBeLoved · 22/02/2009 19:11

Size 6 after 6 babies?

Give me that over a baby bump any day

babynumber7 · 22/02/2009 19:20

I guess I'm quite lucky but it would be nice for someone to ask me 'when's it due?' or not look so surprised when I say, 'well actually I'm already 7 months gone' (or in the case of an SIL, tell me I must have my dates wrong as there's no way I can be THAT pregnant... [hmmm]

drlove8 · 22/02/2009 19:21

babynumber7- my god woman! you must be made of elastic or something , very .amazing!

Newb · 22/02/2009 20:30

I'm 20 weeks and look like I've had a big dinner. Baby is average size. I'm 5ft 8 with size 8 feet (so allegedly big pelvis - here's hoping in July.... Am usually size 12 - 14 and hourglass, more than anything have just lost my waist...

Pinkchampagne · 22/02/2009 21:02

My sister is 21 weeks pregnant & you can't tell she is pregnant at all!

Pinkchampagne · 22/02/2009 21:03

She has just had her scan & all is fine with the baby & it is moving around lots. She is just lucky!

bronze · 22/02/2009 21:27

I've ordered my first pair of maternity trousers. I'm 31+ weeks

YesSirICanBoogie · 22/02/2009 22:16

Don't worry at all! I was desperate to look pregnant with my first but being a little larger with a big chest I didn't look pregnant until at least 6 months and only then it depended on what I was wearing. This time, strangers have been asking if I'm expecting since I was about 9 weeks! A woman in my ante-natal class had such an enormous bump I thought she was having twins and she ended up having a 5lb baby. You might just have very strong internal stomach muscles!

lolianja · 23/02/2009 01:21

Don't worry.

I'm a skinny minny (5'9, size 8ish) and I hardly showed at all until the 3rd trimester. Somebody I bumped into in Marks and Sparks at 24 weeks didn't even clock I was pregnant. My belly was flat. I've only been in maternity trousers for about a month and a lot of my pre-pregnancy sweaters still fit me. I have a tiny waist and ribcage and carry all my blubber on my tits (28E pre-pregnancy ) - regardless of how chunky and twiggy we are some women just don't show until late. I was 10lbs at birth and my mother was hardly showing at 30 weeks.

I'd say it was more a testament to your abdominal muscles than a cause for concern!

lolianja · 23/02/2009 01:22

Just to add, I'm 39 weeks today - one or two comments in my above post have no real relevance unless I point that out!

tjtheminx · 23/02/2009 01:45

I'm fairly average size (5 5 and about size 10-12) and normally have a chubby tummy.

On DS 1 didn't show until at least 26 weeks and my next door neighbours didn't know I was pg until they saw DS in his pram! (asked if I was babysitting!)
