Foetal Heart Scan?

I just received a letter telling me I am scheduled for a detailed foetal heart scan on 6th March. Not that I mind having another scan but this was never mentioned to me at any of my OB appointments.

I do have type II diabetes, so maybe it has something to do with that?

Has anyone else had this done? Do you know what they were looking for?

I'll be 24 + 3 at the scan.

I didn't have to have one in the end but it was a possibility for me as I have a congenital heart defect myself which could have possibly affected the baby (DD).

When they explained it to me (long time ago now) they basically said it was a more detailed scan that focuses on the baby's heart. They look for any abnormalities etc.

Not sure if diabetes has anything to do with it though.

I take it you have had you 20 week scan by now then? Did they say they had found anything in the 20 week scan?

Hopefully someone will be along soon who has more info for you as my experiences and info are very limited.

Hello there,

I had one of these as my dad has a heart condition - they can pick up congenital heart problems. I think they do it as routine if there is a family history of heart problems, maybe diabetes is another trigger? Its very much like a normal scan but with a specialist sonogropher - mine was called a feotal cardiology nurse. The equipment they have can zoom in much closer on the heart. It takes about 30 mins, I did find it a bit nerve racking as the lady told me I had to lie very still and not talk!

My little one looked normal, but the good thing is that even if they do pick up something they will be ready to give you the best care when baby is born. She did warn me however that it cannot pick up all heart problems.

Hope this helps

Thanks to both of you.

Yes I've had my 20 week and everything was fine.

My brother was born with a hole in his heart, so it might be due to that, although I would have thought someone would have told me it was going to happen!!
