Excess amniotic fluid, 34 weeks now , had a scan and worried what this means?

I was sent for a scan as i am big for my dates. There is 26cm of amniotic fluid, off the scale, and this could mean the baby is not swallowing and has a blind oesephegus. Anyone else had this problem. Having a scan in two weeks time and hoping the levels will drop. Really worried though. Anyone else had this problem ?

I had this with both pg's. It's called polyhydramnios. Don't google it, you will get all the horror stories

There CAN be some complications surrounding this and you are best to talk to your consultant (if you didn't have one before, you probably will do now) about a plan of action for the birth. They may want to induce you at 38 weeks as the waters going by themselves can be dangerous. I was booked to be induced at 38 weeks with DS but waters went at 36+5 - he was born 2 days later by emergency section but is absolutely fine - apart from being a terrible 2 now!

Thank you so much for your advice, i have spoken to the midwife and am seeing the consultant in a weeks time, when i am 36 weeks. Nice to hear of soemone else in this situation, many thanks Glad your two were both born healthy, the terrible twos are great fun arent they!

Hi, I can totally identify with you - I was diagnosed with this at 38wks. I Googled it and terrified myself - please don't Google, it's not worth it, and there are scare stories on every page.

I was off the scale too and worried like mad over whether there was something wrong with the baby. There wasn't - it was just a case that my body had made lots of extra fluid, simple as that (and when DS was born there was floods and floods of it gushing out, and yes, I got the "man the lifeboats" "goodness it's a waterfall" "should have worn my wellies today" etc comments!!!)

DS is absolutely fine in every way and there was no sinister reason for the excess fluid, the chances are you will be exactly the same. There are lots of posts here from those who have had it with no particular cause or problem which I found very reassuring to read pre-birth.

I second (third?) the don't google bit - instead have a look on here and you will find lots and lots of very reassuring threads where everything has worked out fine but which will give you a bit of a steer on what to expect
