DH working away towards EDD - until what date?

Hi guys,

I am due on 7th May and husband has been asked to do conferences at the end of March 22 - 26th March - We have a scan on 23rd to look at hydronephrosis on baby's kidney so I think he'll want to come to that, though I don't mind if he doesn't. They're just going to tell us it's still enlarged.

When would you ask your partner to stop going away (we're talking to Europe here and maybe America) - how close to your EDD would you like him to remain the in the Country?

I'd probably ask that the trip you mention is his last.

Is it your first baby? Will he still be able to work/get paid if he doesn't travel?

Dh was going to stop going abroad after returning home on the evening of my due date with dd (my first), but his colleagues said he was mad when he was with them the week before she was due, so he was at home for nearly a week before EDD in the end.

My husband works away a lot, and we agreed 36 weeks as a cut off for both my pregnancies. Had my first child at 42 weeks, so no particular problems, but had second child at 38 weeks, so was cutting it fine (especially as I went in for a routine appt. and was told they were keeping me in and delivering by c-section a.s.a.p! DH had to be dragged out of a meeting and race across London in the rush hour traffic to make the birth....).

If it is your first (so you don't need to worry about caring for other children) then I'd be happy going quite close to the due date, particularly if the trips are only to Europe.

I was induced at 38 weeks with ds1 and he managed to get back from South Africa in time (told me later that he almost missed a connecting flight ). Getting back from most places in Europe is a doddle (America less so).

With ds2, dh was given the green light to travel until 40 weeks (I think he was in Dublin at 39 weeks). I took the view that I'd rather he got travelling over and done with before the baby came along as he'd be more useful to me afterwards.
