I went to the doctor when i found out i was pregnant at bout 8 weeks or so and she told me to make an appointment with the surgery receptionist to see the MW. They didnt have any appointments for weeks though (i would've been about 12 weeks by the time i got to see the MW) so i got the MWs phone number and called her directly to organise my booking appointment. She came round the next week to do it.

Is your doctor or someone organising for a MW to get in touch with you?

I think I had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks with my first pregnancy and 12 weeks with my 2nd. have you made an appointment with your GP? They should probably be your first point of call and can get the ball rolling and book you in for your first scan.

And this is why I am paying for independent care for this pregnancy. NHS midwifery care for non high-risk patients is dire. I know they are understaffed, and overstretched, but it's a ridiculous state of affairs.

I first saw my midwife at 8 weeks and she organised my scan for 12 weeks at the hospital.

As you will have realised, things difer a lot from area to area! Where do you live? Call your surgery and ask when you should expect to get an appt, and if it's after 12 weeks, find out how you go about booking the dating scan or if it's done automatically for you.

I live in the North West, i went to the doctors when I was 4-5 weeks pregnant and they said they would arrange for the midwife to contact me, I had a miscarriage 6 months ago at 7 weeks the day I found out I had miscarried I received my letter from the midwife arranging to call later in the week, so the appointment was cancelled, thought that I would have heard something by now, does it cost a lot of money to have independent care Geepers?

mind you I have already had 2 internal scans as I had been spotting the first they said I was 5-6 weeks and was a little early and to go back a week later, went back last Friday where they could see the heartbeat but they stated it was a little slow which could end up either way (miscarriage), have to go back on Monday, would not go on Friday as it is the 13th!!!

Midwives here will only see you once you are 12 weeks although by the time you get an appointment you are nearer 14-16 weeks . Definately varies area to area,my sil who lives near London saw a midwife at 8 weeks and had a 12 week scan as standard. Here you only have one scan at 20 weeks! They will scan you at 12 -14 weeks if you are unsure of your dates or have a family history of twins. Consquently, everyone is vague about dates and/or has twins in the family

I think it depends where you live and how your surgery organises things. I phoned the surgery to say I was pregnant and need to see the doctor (I assumed he should be my first port of call). The receptionist asked did I really "need" to see the doctor or was I happy to see the midwife? I said midwife was fine - no probs in previous pg and receptionist booked me an appt to see MW. I saw midwife just a few days later at the usual surgery ante-natal clinic. I was 8 weeks pg and apologised - I felt I was seeing her quite soon. She said she liked to see her expectant mums early and that this was a good time to be seeing her for the first time. After that I had a 10 week scan and saw MW again at 12 weeks.
