Low lying Placenta - how common is it?

Hi! Had a scare yesterday at 23 weeks with a small amount of light bleeding. Went straight to hospital and baby is fine but scan showed a low lying placenta. All else is fine and no more bleeding. I have been told to rest. Is this common? I'd like to know anyone else's experience as I don't know how long I have to rest for. Will I have to stop work? Any advice/comments apreciated! Thanks

Hi KirstenEsp, i was diagnosed with a low-lying placenta at 21 weeks - 1.5cm away from the cervix. I was told the overwhelming majority of low-lying placentas move as the uterus expands, and was booked in for another scan at 36 weeks to check.

Had the 36-week scan today and the good news is it's moved well away from the cervix - more than 5cm away from the danger zone, so have the all-clear.

try not to worry too much, though if you have any bleeding, it's important to get to checked out straight away. I'd be surprised if the advice to rest is meant to last the duration of your pregnancy - I certainly didn't get any advice like that - perhaps worth clarifying with your mw?

all the best for the rest of your pregnancy.
