Anyone ever been offered a C-section purely on the basis of suspected large baby/previous large baby?

Happened to a good friend of mine - baby was nearly 4kgs (8.5lbs?) at 38 weeks or so while friend is quite petite and ob told her if she gave birth vaginally there would be a 75% chance of her needing an emergency c-section anyway, so she went for the scheduled c-section - it was her first baby after 3 attempts at IVF and she didn't want to take risks. As it happened, her insurance fully covered the cost of having the c-section privately for medical reasons, which would not have been the case for a routine vaginal birth.
Another friend of mine who is absolutely tiny with a hubbie who is a giant was pregnant with a huge baby boy (like dad), was all set on natural birth, had an emergency c-section in the end because of size. For second baby, she went with scheduled c as was also a very big boy and she didn't want to go through trauma of emergency c-section again.

me, with ds I was measuring 6 weeks bigger than I actually was and like pp friend told that was in all likelihood going to end up having an emergency c-section. I am very small frame and went ahead on this advice...ds was....8.5 pound. Needless to say I am going to try naturally this time despite measuring big again.

I had a large (ish) DS1 he was 9lbs 3 oz and throughout my second pregnancy they constantly monitored the baby for size etc with extra growth scans.

When I asked them if they found it be anouther biggie would they offer a c-section they said no only if it ws a real whopper (which they consider to be over 11lbs)

I am quite a tall lady though - it would have probably been different if I was petite.

BTW DS2 was 8lb 13oz so it doesn't always follow that second ones are bigger.

yep. baby was scanning large all the way through, and at 39 weeks was scanning 9lb 6oz and i was told it could be a pound heavier than that (ie 10lb 6)... i'm 5 feet 2 and the obstetrician told me he didn't want to be responsible for what happened if i went into labour naturally. i was told i was having elective cs the following morning.
dd1 was 8lb 6oz lol. (pfb lol - the other two were vbac and heavier, but enormously complicated, in hindsight the obs may have been right about my frame lol) and i have now got a letter explaining to any obs in the future that i should be given an elec cs.

8lb 6 lol - i laughed for a week.

I'm in this process now nearly 34 weeks, got a scan tomorrow and another at 36 or 38 weeks to check for growth. My DD was 9lb 1oz and I'm 5ft with a tiny frame. She didn't even descend into my pelvis after 24 hours of induced labour so emcs. I don't think its the actual weight that is often the problem my DD had a 98th percentile head, my son to be is measuring 99th percentile head and stomach. I was told when my DD was born that her shoulders would have been too big to deliver naturally.

I've been told if expected to be over 4kg then I can have an elective. However, my hospital is very keen on vbacs and a decision on an elective is not normally made until 38 weeks.

If one more person tells me that you don't grow a baby that is too big for your pelvis...

i am currently going through this.My ds was 10lb3, which was a vaginal birth after having dd who was 8lb14. Am being monitored with this one as they think that baby weighs just over 5lb already and am only 33 weeks pregnant. To be quite honest i think i will try for natural birth as don't fancy having a csection with 2 preschoolers to look after and a newborn! Have app at 36 weeks to scan again and discuss baby weight and delivery options. Must admit my biggest thing is dont want to opt for c section (I am terrified!) For baby to only weigh 9 or 10lb!

tsom · 05/02/2009 10:28

had an elective cs for other reasons and unexpectedly had a 4kg (9lb) baby at 38 weeks. They didn't seem too concerned next time round, I had a glucose tolerance test but no growth scans. Had cs, again not for for growth reasons and ds2 was 8lb 12oz so agree they don't always get heavier with every pg

pluto · 05/02/2009 18:15

I have been offered CS - and taking it up - because the scan at 36 weeks indicated the baby was already 8lbs 5oz. DS was an emergency section and weighed in at 9lb 3oz 10 days late. The emergency section for DS was not related to his size but at the time the surgeon said that they were surprised at his size when he was born as my bump didn't indicate it, and that I should be monitored in future pgs for baby's growth.

When they offered me a CS this time one of the reasons was baby's size - but also because I've had one before. The consultant said that growth scans are pretty accurate about 500g either way.

ChezzaB · 05/02/2009 20:14

When do they tell you they are going to monitor you for growth etc? I am only 11 weeks but DS weighed 9lb 15 1/2 however I am not small myself and had a nice easy birth! Do you think they will want to give me extra scans etc.

skramble · 05/02/2009 20:19

Yes frst baby was 11lb 7 and very difficult labour ending in a section. Really seemed to be a done deal that it would be a section for the second one, thank goodness.

BTW DD was only 9lb 4 so was smaller/

Carrie06 · 05/02/2009 21:22

I've had growth scans every 2 weeks simce 16 weeks due to previous PE and IUGR but this baby is >90th centile for growth (head & tummy are above 97th centile). Estimated weight is 5 and a half pounds at 32 weeks so expecting a big baby by term. Consultant recommending a section because of previous section and big baby. Cx
