Hi... Just wanting a glimmer of hope really... TTC (day 25 of 28 day cycle) and had a good feeling about this month (Trying to remain optimistic each month)
Anyway at OV time I had a raging fever and an ear infection - folowed by a week of antibiotics (Clarythromycin). Now the other ear is infected and yet another dose.
Is there any point in hoping that implantation COULD occur and if a pregnancy were confirmed - are the risks of miscarriage much higher? (We've already had 2 MC's recently.)
I know what will be will be - I was just hoping for some positive stories that it could happen and be succesful - despite the odds against it.
Many thanks in advance...

No personal experience, but aren't antibiotics causing contraception failure one of the reasons for unexpected pregnancy?

I know a friend is sure that this is why the pill failed for her. A healthy wee girl was the result, and whether it was the reason that the pill didn't work for her, she was definitely taking antibiotics at the time of conception.

Wishing you well

Thanks shonaspurtle - that's true - not thought about that!

It does depend onteh antibiotic though - some OK, others not.

look at this.

The upshot of this report is that ih high doses Clarithomycin caused damage to foetus' in animal studies. In patients (in a small group of patients I should say) there was no siginifcant difference in abnormalities with those that had the drug. There was a higher risk of MC though (about double) although there may have bene other factors, and the odds were still in favour of a successful pg.

It is not recommended that it is taken during pg because of the animal studies (which are always done at a higher relative dose).

As you say what will be will be...

SMS - wow... Thank you for finding that... Now I'm sat here looking at the box wondering whether to take them - but I've already had a weeks worth 2 weeks ago. Part of me thinks I should leave it till Friday to see if AF arrives & if it does, take them then. That said, if I don't take them and I am PG, then all I'll do is worry about another MC. What a mess... Guess I should take them, hope my ear infection goes away then try again next month. Just don't know if I can face the heartbreak of another MC...(Making an awfuly big assumption that I cold be PG anyway) - what a waffle!

Sorry Ginger....I didn't want to upset you - I want to be honest with you. And as I say the risks of mc weren't particularly high (14% I think; but they are higher than the untreated group)

It is a class C in pregnancy - which officially classes as "unknown effects". TBH I would call your GP/pharmacist for specific advice. Tell them you are ttc. Are you allergic to penicllin? If not then Amoxycillin is a safe alternative, as is erythromycin so you can get a safer treatment option. You don't have to suffer.

Could you just tell your GP you are TTC there are antibiotics that are ok to take during pregnancy. Good luck XXX

BabyBump2B · 04/02/2009 18:59

If it makes you feel better I got pregnant toward the end of 5 rounds of 6 different antibiotics and everything (so far, knock on wood) is fine - I'm 13+3. I'm convinced, after almost a year of trying all my body needed was to be destroyed by the drugs to get knocked up! My last batch was apparently ok but Dr got me to stop taking them earlier as he felt it was ok.

I would call your Dr and tell them that there is a chance you are pg and could they prescribe something that is safe in pregnancy.

Like I said I had more than 8 weeks worth of antibiotics and baby is fine!

Thank you - that is reassuring Babybump2B - good luck with your pregnancy xxx

SMS - you didn't upset me - I appreciate the advice and respect the honesty... I am allergic to penicillin - and both nurses at the practice know we are TTC (although I told them that at the last visit)...

I'm just cross at myself really I've not tested +ve and may come on tomorrow - in which case I'd have suffered longer...

And that said - if we do get PG again NOTHING will stop me worrying even if I'm fit and healthy...

Oh the things we worry about / beat ourselves up with... Ho hum... The positive stories do give me hope though - so thanks
