Peeling Tongue!!

LUCIA22 · 03/02/2009 10:55

I have just looked in the mirror to look at my tongue as it felt sore and seen white marks which look like it has been peeling as well as a split at the end where it is sore. I am 33 weeks and feeling ok apart from permanently exhausted which I guess is normal. Any ideas what this could be or do I need to see a doctor?

Not a doctor, but could this be thrush?

I had a recurrent sore tongue thru the first and part of second trimester - it was really unpleasant! But Per is right, it sounds like thrush. Go to your nearest pharmacist and stick it out at him/her. If they don't know then try doc.

agree, could be thrush

I'm 33 weeks and my lips are peeling++, didn't have this with ds1 and 2 but think cold weather to blame - would not really explain sore tongue though

it could be geographic tongue I have it anyway but it got much much worse and very painful when pregnant. Can look like weels and like some of the surface of the tongue has gone in patches, these can be white around the edges. Might be worth a quick visit to the nurse practitioner as they can prescribe a mouth rinse that helps

Thats exactly what it is like, it looked at first like white rings but when I looked closely it was actually patches where it had peeled. Those bits are not painful its the cracked bit on the end that hurts.

Yeah, I had this with both pregnancies. It hurt a bit. It's a sign of your immune system not working so well, which is normal in pregnancies.

Avoid acidic food (citrus, vinegar, tomato), as these make it worse.

My dentist looked at it a lot, and had a colleague look at it, agreed it was thrush/geographic tongue, and not worth treating, really. It cleared up naturally when I wasn't pregnant any more.
