I'm 5 months pregnant next week and everything seems to be going well.

I've just been on the scales and I've only gained 4lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight which seems really low to me.

Is this normal or should I be worried ? I eat all the time ( or so it seems ) so was shocked to see how little weight I've gained.

I've only gained a 1lb so far, I'm coming up to 17 weeks. I braved the scales on Thursday, expecting to see a good 10lb or so gain after Christmas coupled with books/websites saying i'd have gained 5-10lbs by now.. but nope, only 1lb, and I seem to have lost weight since my 12 week scan.

I suppose most of what we eat gets burned off for fuel for our ovens, so what may seem like alot is actually just the right amount? Who knows! I bet I pile it on after 5 months

Thanks for that. Glad I'm not the only one ! Was really paranoid that I'm doing something wrong especially as they say I should have gained almost a stone by now !!

You won't be doing anything wrong

I'm actually a bit at my weight gain so far. I was on Weight Watchers before falling pregnant, and if I so much as looked at a cookie, I'd whack on 2lbs that week. Since Christmas I have eaten like I've never eaten before

Hi, wouldn't worry too much as long as you are measuring to date. I only gained upto 14lbs with all of my babies and two of them were 9lbs at birth. so never put on too much if you think you got to have placenta, water etc.

MKG · 01/02/2009 15:35

Don't worry too much. I'm 35 weeks and have only gained around 10 pounds. In my other pregnancies I gained around 50!. The midwives aren't worried as the baby is active and I'm measuring right for dates.

Take it easy, and consider yourself lucky for now.

My midwife actually refused to weigh me when I asked on Wednesday at 39+4. We don't have scales at home so I've no idea what I've gained. Apart from the bump itself and the huge boobs I haven't changed that much; in the pub yesterday some bloke nearly fell over in surprise when I walked past cos you can't really tell when I'm sat down or from the back.

Midwife said so long as you're eating and feel OK and the bump is right for dates they aren't bothered! It's only usually a problem apparently if you put on loads, the baby will pillage you for whatever it needs even if you only put on a few pounds to get to term.

I put on half stone, but did suffer from horrendous sickness throughout. My best friend lost weight, although she was quite large beforehand. We both had healthy babies although my DD was only 5lbs.

Lulumama · 01/02/2009 16:42

i lost two stone in both pregnancies and finished up weighing less than when i started

only concern is if your BMI is 35 + . but otherwise, i think they are really not concerned if baby appears to be growing etc

average gain is around 25 pounds, made up of extra body fat, extra fluid and blood, breast tissue, placenta, baby, uterus, and so on

Hi,
Dont be worried - I have only gained 10lbs in total & my baby is due in a week. She is growing fine & is perfectly healthy.
I think at 5 months, I was on par with you, only about 4 or 5lbs. As long as baby is growing ok, count yourself lucky

Good Luck with pregnancy x

WelshSuprise · 01/02/2009 18:50

Thanks all for the advice. Guess I should count myself lucky then and start enjoying it. Just panicked a bit because with my DD I think I put on alot more !!

Baby is definately active though and I have my 20 week scan in 2 weeks time so I presume they will tell me if they have any concerns.

Thanks again !!

I didn't gain much until about 22-24 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy. Think I had gained about 4 or 5lbs at that stage, too. Don't worry. The weight gain sped up in the last trimester (a total of 2 stone all in all) and my DD weighed a healthy 7lbs.

I'd rather it that way than my first pregnancy - put on 4 stone and had a 10lb-er!

ktjj84 · 01/02/2009 21:43

I'm 11 weeks pregnant with 1st baby and i have put on 10lbs already! I'm now worried i'm putting on 2 much weight!!!!!

AliceMumma · 01/02/2009 23:31

I am 39+4 and have put on around 25lb, where as last pregnancy it was 50lb! As long as you are eating well and not trying to diet or anything, and are measuring right for dates then its obviously what your body is naturally supposed to do!
