Just accidentally ate raw egg - console me!

Hi everyone,

I just made a cake and ate some of the leftover mixture before I remembered it had raw egg in it. Ek! I am not sure what I should do. Should I try to make myself throw up? What are the chances of actually getting ill? My non-pregnant friend ended up in hospital for 3 weeks with salmonella poisoning from poached eggs so I know the consequences are dire if you catch it..

Help!

Thanks so much

Not sure - but throwing up wouldn't get rid of all the salmonella if there is any. Did the eggs smell ok?

The eggs smelt fine and we just bought them today. Hmmm. I guess I just have to wait and see. I feel so stupid. That'll teach me for being piggy and eating the mixture ;)

Just looked up the likelihood of contracting salmonella from raw eggs and found this:

they (the FDA in the US) state that only 1 in 20,000 eggs has the salmonella bacteria. The odds of getting salmonella from an egg are extremely remote and you have a better lifetime chances of dying from accidental drowning (1 in 1,000), storm related (1 in 3,000) or slipping (1 in 6,500). Nowhere does the National Safety Council's data state that raw eggs are a common risk, however, death from choking on food is rated at 1 in 5000 odds. Even if, by some really bad luck, you did get salmonella, it is unlikely you would die from it. The general consensus should then be; eating raw eggs do not expose a normal healthy person to any more risk than regular day-to-day living.

Hopefully that puts it into a bit more perspective for you (or gives you more to worry about ).

You'll be fine. How many times did you "lick the bowl" as a child. The "rules" are just there to be absolutely on the safe side....

tumtumtetum · 31/01/2009 20:34

Salmonella is pretty rare...

We all ate cake mixture when we were little and I never heard of anyone getting it...

I am sure you will be fine

In fact I promise.

Don't know what the chances of getting ill are. But I ate tiramisu that I had made myself with raw egg and soft cheese in it whilst pregnant. Don't know what I was doing really. I knew all the rules, it was my third child, I made the tiramisui for a friends BBQ and ate it for desert and then realised what I had done the next day FFS!!!!! I wasn't being flippant I just had some sort of mental black out about it - enjoyed it though

I wouldn't make yourself throw up if I were you. The probability is that you will be fine. Chalk it up to experience like I did!

Thanks so much everyone. You have made me feel so much better. I really appreciate it. Sorry for the double-posting, btw.
