...ah I love mumsnet. You can ask all those questions you don't dare raise in real life. I'm 17 weeks and for the last few days my wee has smelt different and much stronger than before. No pain or anything, am drinking quite a bit. Is this normal?

Thanks ;)

i remember a similar thing when pg and dont forget your sense of smell is much better too.

Also, i used to work in a biochemistry lab testing wee for various things and my boss always said he could always tell a sample from a pg women cos it smelt much stronger (lovely job i had! and a slightly strange boss!)

I had very different smelling urine as well as discharge around 15/16 wks and was slightly freaked out, i went for tests to see if it was an infection but all came back completely normal... Perhaps visit your dr so you can have a urine sample done to see if there is any evidence of a urinary tract infection as these are pretty common during pregnancy! Good luck

I was going to say that your sense of smell is more sensitive too!

Also you have loads more blood pumping around and being filtered etc and running the placenta and the waste from the baby (assume that get filtered out of the womb somehow!) and you're probably not drinking that much more so it probably is stronger wee!

TheProvincialLady · 31/01/2009 14:11

Mine did too - stronger and sweeter, for almost the whole pregnancy. In the absence of symptoms such as burning, feeling unwell etc I would say it is hormones.

tumtumtetum · 31/01/2009 14:20

Provinciallady you have made your wee sound delicious, like some kind of aged wine!

NormaJeanBaker · 31/01/2009 14:21

I have been meaning to ask about this. My wee always smells different - sweeter and less acidy - when I'm pregnant and goes back to normal when I've had the baby. But this time it hasn't gone back to normal - baby is 10 and a half months. Still hormones scooting about you reckon? Maybe that's why my tummy still looks like there's someone living in it.

Can you believe I just went for a wee and, thinking of this thread, had a good inhale.

Sorry to say the odour was neither sweet nor appealing.

It was a bit odd though - I may get Jilly Goulden onto it...

Starlight are you Jilly Goulden?

Rhia30 · 31/01/2009 16:40

I had the same - very different and strong smelling wee. Very difficult to describe what the smell was like.... Anyway, as change in urine smell can be a sign of UTI, I'd definitely have that tested because untreated it can cause problems. But if that's clear then it's probably just one of those weird pregnancy things!
Oh and I did have UTI and after it was treated and cleared, the smell still stayed...

Pinkmarshmallow · 31/01/2009 17:53

Mine changed too in the last few weeks, I think it was because I'd started eating way more vegetable and fruit.

Gemzooks · 31/01/2009 20:02

I think it's Pregnacare... you're excreting the extra vits..

tumtumtetum · 31/01/2009 20:10

Blimy gemzooks are you psycic? I am taking pregnacare!

The smell must mean I'm excreting loads of extra vits then, so my diet must be tip top

xxhunnyxx · 31/01/2009 21:14

I'm not sure why it happens but mine stank! It's not so strong now tho. I mentioned it to the midwife n she tested it and said it was fine but didnt offer any explination as to why it happens.
I can only assume that it's just stronger cos my body is using the 10 gallons of water that i drink every day to make the extra blood so my wee is more concentrated.
It's horrible tho, when I'm feelin a bit queasy anyway the last thing u wanna be smellin is stinky wee!! lol

tumtumtetum · 31/01/2009 21:19

Love your posting name hunny - you are very brave!

I think a lot of the wee stink is because your sense of smell gets so good - loads of everyday things smell really bad to me at the mo!

Pinkmarshmallow · 01/02/2009 19:04

I'm on Pregnacare too, so that could be the answer!

frazzledoldbag · 01/02/2009 21:49

Funny smelling wee was always my first indication of pregnancy. Am now 25 wks and it still smells funny. Bleurgh.
(have been tested for UTI and all clear, in case you're worried!)

frazzledoldbag · 01/02/2009 21:50

BTW I also take Pregnacare! Maybe that's it?

fiena · 09/03/2015 22:34

Im on pregnacare too and have sweet smelling wee. Strange isn't it.
