NHS 20 Week Scan - sex talk?

My Dr informed me today that women in my area (Edinburgh) are finally entitled to a 20 week scan. Hurrah! Anyone know what the offical NHS/Edinburgh area line is on discussing the baby's sex?

Really!? That's GREAT news! I've just been looking in to the private scan options.

Oooh I do hope they are willing to have a peek at the nethers.

Bit confusing there - I mean either the offical NHS line or anyone's experiences in the Edinburgh area in recent months on whether they'll tell you what sex Junior is.

Don't know how recent the change is. They still don't offer nuchal fold scan which is a shame, but yes this'll save a pretty penny on a private scan. But of course if you go private they'll tell you what sex the baby is if you ask. Just not sure what the NHS will do.

Don't get your hopes up tho! I had 20 week scan today. Techninian was happy to look but the wee bugger had legs together and all curled up so it was impossible to see!

Does Scotland have different rules to England? Or is it down to each region? Cos I know that Aberdeen dont tell u the sex. I know that Aberdeen is a long way away from Edinburgh but not sure if it's just a scottish rule.

My poor technician was wiggling her scanner all over the place trying to get her readings while trying to avoid the fact the sprog was desperately waggling his todger at us. We told her we did want to know so was ok and she could slow down & get what she needed. Wouldnt sit still or a photo tho.

I think it is a hospital-by-hospital decision. Ours locally will tell the woman, but will not tell the man if the woman says she doesn't want to know. And they don't offer to tell you at all - you have to ask.

Our hospital is in England and 2 years ago brought a policy of not saying what the sex is, and requesting parents not to ask as the technicians won't be able to tell them.

Their reason is that the 20 week scan is to check for anomalies, not to find out the sex.

I had a 20 week scan with baby #2 in Edinburgh at ERI for medical reasons, they do not tell you the sex of your baby, they have signs up that say, "due to appointment time restrictions it is not possible to find out the sex of your baby, please do not ask your sonographer" in the waiting room.

It is good that they are offering 20 week scans though, first time round I had to go private.

I also had a 20 week scan at ERI with second baby due to medical concerns and although the sign was there I asked anyway and the consultant told me. Sometimes I think its even who you get rather than the policy.

Any more thoughts on this? I've got my scan tomorrow

tigana · 19/04/2009 19:29

Leaflet at our english hospital 4 yrs ago said they wouldn't tell as the scan wasn't for that reason. But the technician asked if we wanted to know...with usual "can't be 100% sure" warning.
Suspect it is just a bit of back-covering policy due to previous wrong predictions, plus disspaointed parents if baby is camera shy etc.
