How long can a chemical pregnancy last?

I don't know if this should be filed under miscarriage, but for now it's here....

According to my dates I'm 6 weeks pg today, however I've had some spotting so I've just been for an early scan and the sonographer couldn't see anything. Not a sac, nothing. She checked my tubes and they all looked clear too which is good news, but I'm a bit concerned about the fact that by now something should be visible. I've had some bloods done, got the next set in 48 hours, won't find out for sure til monday what's going on (hopefully)... I'm thinking it's a chemical pregnancy, but I wouldn't have thought it would hang around this long.

I have a normal 28 day cycle, LMP 11th Dec, I think I ovd on Xmas day, and only had sex on Christmas day cos I was feeling so poorly with a cold. I definitely ov'd cos the sonographer could see I'd ov'd from the right ovary, and the uterus lining was all there, I know I haven't bled enough to have had a miscarriage. So far it's all been old blood, bar one tiny bit of watery new blood. What on earth is going on? Anyone had a similar experience?

Really feel for you - I don't know much about chem PG but had bleeding with my PG at what I thought was 6 weeks, and went to EPAU where I had teats etc done. On the first scan was toldno baby just empty sac etc etc - and 4 days later I saw my DD for the first time on the scan. Good luck - don't give up hope x

Thanks for the reassurance, I am a little concerned that there wasn't even a sac though, nothing at all. I miscarried at 5+4 in October and had a really big bleed and passed a clot the size of my little finger which I'm sure would have shown up on a scan if it had still been inside me, so surely at 6 weeks there must be something there... where is that baby hiding?

With my second baby I had early scan at 5-6 weeks (due to cramping pains)& was told there was nothing there.Even had blood tests that showed my hgc levels were much too low. They re-scanned a week later there was a 6week foetus with a heartbeat. He must have been hiding?

ah now that's what I wanted to hear mumface Thanks for that glimmer of hope (I'm still bracing myself for the worst though)

Of course, i may have ov'd a bit later than xmas day, so be a few days behind my dates and.... oh I'm just trying to persuade myself that there might be something there. This wait is going to kill me

headfairy I was so shocked as was certain had miscarried,2nd scan was to double check .The consultant said they had never seen a viable foetus with hcg blood levels so low.But there he was. There must be comfy bits to hide in there.I was also behind a few days in dates.I would't have an early scan with this PG(16wks now)As it was such an awful experience.

headfairy, sorry to hear you're going through this. I can't offer any advice but wanted to wish you well. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks olivo

mumface, sounds like you were very lucky, which makes me think it's less likely to happen with me - not that I'm terribly unlucky, but more that it's probably very unusual and therefore unlikely to be happening to me. But thanks for the encouragement
