What's the earliest point in pregnancy you can actually see anything on a scan?

I'm 5+4 and just had the tiniest bit of a bleed, was wondering what's the earliest I'll be able to see anything on a scan... heartbeat etc?

I have just been told by GP that it is about 6/7 weeks. I too need an early scan but am only 5 weeks so have to wait

With my last pregnancy I was scanned at 6 weeks and they saw a blob with heartbeat. This pregnancy I have already been scanned 4 times! The 1st was at around 5 weeks and they could see a sac with nothing in it, a week later there was a blob with a heartbeat, 2 weeks later there was an even bigger blob!
Hope you are ok. Have you got an appointment with your EPU?

the earliest would probably be after seven weeks although I had a scan at seven and a half and had to come back a week later cos they couldn't see the heartbeat yet. It's a bit too soon for you at the moment I'm afraid.

I had a scan using a device that looked like a huge vibrator, I am sure this was about 7/8 weeks. It just picked up a heartbeat.

brettgirl2 · 19/01/2009 20:04

I had a scan and they saw the heartbeat at 5+4. I think from reading around I was lucky because it seems to vary quite a lot. I have seen someone on here who got confirmation of viability at 5+3 but that is the earliest I've ever heard of. They normally don't scan before 6 weeks but I wasn't exactly sure of dates. I think that it would probably be worse to have a scan too early and have to go back anyway.

brettgirl2 · 19/01/2009 20:07

Having said that I couldn't see the heartbeat but the stenographer was adamant she could. At 7+4 I could see it too and it was actually baby shaped so more reassuring anyway.

Tinasan · 19/01/2009 20:07

I had a scan at 5+6 and they saw the heartbeat - as brettgirl says they don't normally scan so early but I wasn't sure of dates. I don't think you would see a heartbeat much earlier than this though....can you hang on a few days and then have a scan? HTH

Pinkbump3 · 19/01/2009 20:09

I think they should pick up the sac at around 5 weeks. Sometimes depends on fat layers etc how good the view they can get, sometime they will use the vaginal probe to scan. Check out my profile there is a scan photo of my baby at 8 weeks give you an idea. x

I agree brettgirl, I'd hate for them to say oh we can't see much yet, come back in a week or so, cos that would kill me...

Moominmoma, I don't need an appt at our epu. It's a walk in service thankfully so I can just go whenever. I've been feeling dull achy pains for a couple of weeks really, but I was hoping that was just stretching uterus pains.

twinset, I've had an internal scan before, I guess that's what you had. I know they can scan you earlier internally, but I really don't want to go if they won't see anything.

I had a scan at 5 weeks and they could only see the sac, cue 2 weeks of massive worrying for me. 2 weeks later and they saw the embryo.

mrsboogie · 19/01/2009 20:11

I think its true that the thinner you are the easier it is for them to see a heartbeat. Hence mine not being visible until 8 weeks.

HeadFairy · 19/01/2009 20:12

Thanks for that pinkbump, very helpful to see those scan pics.

Blimey this pregnancy lark is a PITA to be honest, I'd just like skip this bit and go straight to 15 weeks!

I'm 28 weeks and wouldn't mind skipping forward to 40.....

My early scans were both internal btw - to be honest they are less uncomfortable than the pressing on a full bladder thing anyway.

At 7+4 she could see baby OK from outside but she wanted to get a better look at my cyst!

Pinkbump3 · 19/01/2009 20:18

I know it is so difficult all the waiting and worrying. When i went for my first scan they told me there was nothing there sorry and best wishes. they sent me to the epu to discuss what happens next and they scanned me there at the epu and found baby & heartbeat right away and thats the scan pic of my nothing at 8weeks!!

Pinkbump3 · 19/01/2009 20:19

Im 27 weeks brettgirl and wouldnt mind skipping to 40 either lol!

HeadFairy · 19/01/2009 20:30

Ok, so what next then? shall I wait and see if I get any more spotting? If I don't I'm happy to carry on without an early scan at all.

I'd give my eye teeth to be at 28 weeks. I think 15 weeks to 30 weeks was my favourite bit. Randy as hell, with amazing skin and hair

I had an early scan at 8 + 2 weeks, the heartbeat was detected it was like a flashing lisht on the screen and baby looked like a kidney bean and we could see the yolk sac, it measured 1.85cm.
